Gwenith Elaine Riat, age 73, formerly of Nemah, passed away at Frontier Care Facility in Longview on February 16, 2012 of long term health-related problems. Gwenith Elaine Nashif was born to George and Grenith Nashif in Raymond on September 2, 1938. She grew up in Nemah and graduated from Naselle High School in 1957, where she was a cheerleader and song queen. After graduation she attended St. Joseph School of Nursing in Tacoma and married Gerald Riat in 1958 while he was in the Navy. In 1959 she and her husband moved to California until 1973,...

Nancy M. Larson, 90, of Naselle, joined Jesus in Heaven on February 18, 2012, succumbed to a short bout with cancer. She was surrounded by her family at her bedside. She was born to Charles and Anna (Wirkkanen) Bighill on November 14, 1921. She attended Naselle grade and high schools graduating in 1939. She was swept off her feet by the handsome Vernon Larson of Rosburg, who was her husband for 48 years until his death in 1990. She moved back to Naselle where she lived the rest of her life. Naselle School District’s replacement maintenance and operations levy has been approved by district voters. A special election for the levy was held February 14. Voters were asked to replace the existing levy which expires at the end of 2012. The levy allows the district to collect $695,000 per year for three years. As of 8 p.m. February 14, 654 ballots had been counted in Pacific and Wahkiakum Counties; 425 (64.98 percent) voted in favor of the levy. A simple majority is required for approval. We had one day of sunshine and the grass started growing at the Fairgrounds. Thanks to Larry Hendrickson and Dean Seaberg the grass will be mowed, as they brought our equipment back last week. As soon as the tractors arrived projects started getting planned and a few done. Thanks to Ed Stevens, Chuck Gaines, Mike Colver and Barb Clark the water drain is fixed behind the horse barn. Voters in the Naselle/Grays River Valley School District this week received ballots for a special school levy election. The district board of directors has asked voters to renew a three-year special levy to help the district pay maintenance and operation costs not covered by state or federal funding. The levy would raise $695,000 for 2013, 2014 and 2015. The assessment, as stated on the ballot, would be $3.24 per $1,000 of assessed property value. I’m starting this column on a very heartwarming note this week. Remember the little missing dog from the Hull Creek area? Well, Cindy and Rick Lahti are happy to announce that their precious Glory has come home after being missing for several weeks. It appears that she may have been picked up by someone because some of her hair had been cut. Well, back to the lake in our field and driving through inches of water to get out to the highway. It’s not all bad though. We have seen swans for the first time in years, and the usual flocks of duck and geese, as well as blue herons wading in the water. Kellyn Pakenen Hazen has been hired to fill a vacancy left when previous coordinator Tammy Peterson resigned to take a full-time job in the county auditor's office.
