Arvid Emil Simonson was born on March 26, 1914 in Astoria, Oregon. He was the fourth in line of twelve children born to Emil & Maria (Oja) Simonson who emigrated from Finland. He grew up in the upper Young’s River area and attended school there. He graduated from Astoria High School in May of 1932. He worked for Tidewater Timber Co. helping to build the C.R.P.A. shipyard in Astoria and later worked as a shipwright there. He also worked as a Pile-buck before going into the logging business. In the two-mile high school race, Mule sophomore Connar Riley placed fifth, 12:56, and freshman Koby Cothren ninth, 15:02. Born in Longview he grew up in Woodland where he lettered in three sports at Woodland High School and played football at Lower Columbia College in Longview. The Naselle/Grays River Valley School District has settled a suit which two men had filed over alleged violations for the state Open Public Meetings Act. Steve R. Gacke and Stephen Sultemeier filed the suit last May against the district and Directors Hollis Fletcher and Ed Darcher. The plaintiffs claimed that for meetings February 11 and March 9, 2010, the board didn't give proper notification to the public about the meetings. The Columbia Land Trust is engaged in restoration work on a local project site to enhance habitat for deer and fish. The 180-acre property, known to the land trust as Nelson Creek, is situated across State Route 4 from the Julia Butler Hansen National Wildlife Refuge and is bordered by Risk Road and Nelson Creek Road. Indian Jack Slough runs through the site. Two tidegates block migratory fish from accessing the slough. The Washington Court of Appeals last week denied an appeal of a suit over the ownership of the Johnson Park/Rosburg School property. The decision ended a long-standing lawsuit and gave right of ownership to Wahkiakum County. John and Helen Johnson donated land to the county in 1936 for use as a school or park. Naselle-Grays River Valley School Board members and staff discussed new technology, a new name, and a new policy at their meeting on August 17. Business manager John Tienhaara demonstrated the use of an Apple iPad, one possible option the school board could use to reduce its use of paper.
