On September 20 from 2-5 p.m. the Appelo Archive Center in Naselle will host the opening of a special display on historic handwork art, "Heirloom Treasures," featuring pieces on loan from local families. Some of the local artists represented include Tim Bates, Kaisa Saari, Pat Vernon, Nancy Wirkkala and others. The Naselle School Board of Directors appointed Dr. Rick Pass of Astoria to a one year contract as superintendent at their meeting on August 26. Pass assumed his position August 31, three days before students return to school on September 3. The interim contract expires June 30, 2010. The Columbian Estuary Study Taskforce (CREST) has about a week of construction left on a 1500-foot section of habitat restoration on a Grays River tributary that runs through the Gorley farm just off Fossil Creek road. CREST habitat restoration specialist, Amy Ammer said the organization has spent nearly $800,000 on this phase of their project. On June 16, the Naselle-Grays River Valley School Board was treated to the musical styling of Wilho Saari playing his kantele, the national instrument of Finland. Saari, who started playing at age 50, is a fifth generation player. He has spent the last 16 years playing the instrument and annually shares his knowledge with fourth graders at the elementary school.
