, 2009 The Appelo Archive Center in Naselle recently installed a new commercial stair lift to help visitors and staff get to the Center's second floor. With the addition of the lift, visitors will be able to see the displays, and browse through the library and the 3,500 historic photographs of the area. The Naselle Youth Camp, targeted for closure in Governor Christine Gregoire’s budget for 2009-2011, will remain open. The final budget was passed late Saturday by the Legislature. The camp is still subject to the same cost-trimming directives as other state agencies and institutions across the state, however, it is still considered a victory for Senators Brian Hatfield (D-Raymond), and Democratic Reps Dean Takko and Brian Blake of Longview. The Naselle School Board met April 21 to discuss a variety of topics. Naselle-Grays River Valley High School Assistant Principal Jon Tienhaara told the board he would be taking a group of sophomores to the Seattle/Bellingham area May 1, 2 and 3 to tour colleges, including the Art Institute of Seattle and Western Washington University. Thanks to the GEAR-UP grant, Tienhaara and three parents will take around 20 students to look at the schools. The Washington State Department of Transportation has awarded a contract for improvements to highways SR 4 and SR 401 this summer. The project will make safety improvements to the highway corridors in Pacific, Wahkiakum, and Cowlitz counties. The department has planned the improvements to reduce the severity of collisions where motorists have driven off the roadway. More than a year ago, with about 50 boxes of library books, donated by the Friends of the Bend Library in Bend, Oregon, a huge project began to unfold in Rosburg. A public and free library for the west end of Wahkiakum County was envisioned by a few interested volunteers, as well as many residents. A Long Beach man died April 16 when the recyling truck he was driving ran off SR 101. The driver was Brian Keith Shaffer, 36, of Long Beach. He was driving a 1995 recycling truck. He was wearing a seatbelt. The accident occurred at 1:59 p.m. 12 miles northwest of Naselle. According to a report from the Washington State Patrol, the truck was southbound and ran off the road when the front right tire blew out. The Taproot Theatre Company traveled from Seattle to perform for students at Naselle-Grays River Valley School Monday. The uncertainty of the Naselle Youth Camp continues to be the main issue of discussion at the Naselle Grays River Valley School Board meetings. On March 17, the Department of Natural Resources announced they would be pulling forest work crews at the camp at the end of May.
