The U.S. Drought Monitor released a Drought Map and Report on July 13 indicating the west end of Wahkiakum County is moving toward the “D2” category, or severe drought. Wahkiakum County has received 50% less precipitation than normal. “Normal” precipitation percentages were developed with data followed from 1991-2020. While light rain may fall at times, the water table for the Grays is very low. Predictions have been set by the National Weather Service and the U.S. Drought Monitor for August through September and possibly into October at 33% to...
Wahkiakum County residents Joshua Miller and Robert Schultz became fast friends while coaching soccer, bonding over their military experience, love of martial arts, family, and country. Now the pair, who have spent their lifetimes practicing one form of martial arts or another, are offering Brazilian jiu-jitsu, tae kwon do/kickboxing, and fitness classes at a gym they converted from a barn on Puget Island. They started a while back, patting down grass in Schultz's back yard under a hoop house,...
Heather Odom, community health specialist for Wahkiakum Health and Human Services is hoping to inspire new gardeners after taking on the hobby for the first time herself this year. "The Wahkiakum Community Garden does a great job producing vegetables to take to the food pantries, but I want that next step," Odom said. "It's wonderful that you are getting food, but here's how you can grow it yourself." Odom's focus for WHHS is on promoting healthy eating and nutrition in the community. She does...
The second annual Cup of Sunshine food drive competition is over, and the Norse Hall was declared the winner of this year's competition, which raised 575 pounds for local food banks. Jabber Shack owner Sue Zabel is the founder and organizer of the event, which took place between June 1 and July 15 this year. She challenged businesses around the county to collect non-perishable food items for local food banks, with the business to bring in the most items taking home a trophy designed by local...

On Tuesday, the Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners discussed grants, including one to conduct a feasibility study on a consolidation of water systems, as well as other issues and potential issues that could affect the utility and its customers in coming years. General Manager Dan Kay said that five grants were submitted as of the last PUD meeting and they were now in the “hurry up and wait, follow up stage,” and that too was keeping them busy. After learning about a cybersecurity gra...
Wahkiakum County Port 1 Board of Commissioners met last Thursday for their July meeting to discuss traffic issues on port property and a few other matters. With increased traffic to the new River Mile 38 taproom, and some other changes around the marina, Port Manager Todd Souvenir had some suggestions to improve traffic flow, including a 5 mph speed limit. “It makes sense to slow it down a little bit,” Commissioner Scott Anderson said. “You’ve got a lot of boat traffic and a lot of people...
The Wahkiakum County commissioners discussed and approved several items in under an hour Tuesday. The District 1 (Puget Island) planning commission vacancy was filled by a unanimous vote with Ruby Wargnier. They also approved drafting an ordinance to prohibit unlicensed, unregistered or uninsured vehicles from parking within 10 feet of the fog line on county roads. The commissioners approved the closure of the Wahkiakum ferry July 26-27 for work on the ramp on the Oregon side and bumpers and lights on the Washington side. A 2-year agreement...

Wahkiakum School District might be going 1B. The district has one of the lowest enrollments in 2B, and Superintendent Brent Freeman cites safety concerns and post season opportunities as two reasons to approach the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association about adjusting the school’s current classification. He used the Kalama football team as an example. “They’ll have 80 on the sideline and we’ll have 18,” Freeman said. With such small numbers, Wahkiakum can’t field enough players for...

The Washington State Department of Ecology issued a statewide drought advisory last Wednesday, July 12. The snowmelt caused an initial surge for snow-fed rivers and streams, but now most stream flows are projected to be below normal by as much as 75%. RCW 43.83B.011 states that drought conditions mean that a geographic area is expected to receive less...
The Wahkiakum County Port 2 Board of Commissioners heard reports from managers at their meeting on Tuesday. Vista Park continues to be extremely busy, according to Assistant Port Manager Terina Davis. The ice machine they installed earlier this year is proving to be a good investment. Last year, the port had to buy their ice, and would sometimes have to wait for it or run out. They earned a little less than $1,900 on the product at the park. Port staff speculated that it would take four or five...

They’re real humble,” Kay said of Shane Pfenniger, Frankie Mendez, Kevin Vik, Mark Elliott, Scott Cameron, and Doug Condon. “They just happened to be righ...
Commissioners met Tuesday to discuss and approve two issues that the commissioners have been working on for years. The increase in state funding for the ferry has been in the works for two years. As of July 1 house bill 1125 will be in effect and will increase funding of the ferry by the state from 80 to 85 percent. Another long awaited decision was the agreement for an opioid abatement council independent subcommittee. A subcommittee will be formed to allocate and oversee the use of funds to assist people addicted to opioid drugs. The county...

In last week’s edition it was reported that Wahkiakum County commissioners approved the payment/expense of $557,475 for the annual 911 contract. Actually, the commissioners approved the contract for reimbursable revenue up to $557,475 to the county for 911 expenses from the state. The county will receive, not send a payment. Just to be clear; they are receiving revenue, not paying those funds to the state....

In 2017, the Washington State legislature assigned WSU College of...
The restrooms at Erickson Park are closed indefinitely after vandals repeatedly caused damage to the property, leaving town officials wondering how to move forward. The damage didn't all occur at once. Battery packs that powered the timed door locks were stolen, a knob was removed from a sink handle in a bathroom, a waste basket was kicked in, a toilet paper dispenser cover was ripped off, a light sensor was torn from the ceiling, super glue was poured on the exterior of a trash bin, garbage...
