Westend firefighters responded to a smoldering fire last Wednesday at 5:04 p.m. "Fire was called in, not any too soon," said Fire District 3 Commissioner Mark Latham. "This could have gone deep into the trees, and if that were the case, it would have required DNR to be called out. "The home owners were not at this house at the time of the fire; they were called by a neighbor and told of the fire; they stated that they put the fire out June 22, one day after the burn ban was in place. It is...

In the biggest "virtual get-together" of their year thousands of amateur radio clubs from across the country communicated last weekend via radio during a simulated major disaster. Our local club, N7WAH, pretended as if there were no cell service, no phone service, no fuel for generators or vehicles, and no mains electricity. We used batteries and solar power only. We gathered on one of the ballfields at Wahkiakum HS, setting up Friday evening before the "emergency" then operated for 24 hours...

The Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners reconvened last Thursday to approve a bid for the Grays River substation project scheduled for later this year. The PUD received three bids. Following a recommendation from engineers at Brown & Kysar, Inc., they decided to accept the lowest bid from Power Technology, Inc. in the amount of $314,167.10. PTI is available to begin work in late July, and estimates that the project will take 47 days to complete. “I have signed the bid award and it will b...
Wahkiakum County commissioners authorized emergency repairs and a weight restriction load limit for Wirkkala Road north of Deep River when they met Tuesday. Last week, area resident Nick Nikkila reported the culvert was failing and had only a very small opening for drainage. This week, County Engineer Paul Lacy said the culvert had almost collapsed and recommended the county impose a 10,000 lb. weight restriction on the road. The road crew has already placed steel plates over the 4-foot diameter culvert for basic vehicle safety, he said....

Claire Ward, the marketing and communications manager for Noanet returned to Cathlamet on Monday to share results from the broadband survey recently completed in the county. There were two major takeaways from the survey for Ward. One, there is a demand for internet and two, Wahkiakum residents are nice. Noanet needed 400 completed surveys. Twelve hours after the survey became available, there were already 75 responses. In 24 hours, Ward had 100, and in two days, she’d heard from 10 percent o...

On Saturday in the evening mist, I stood with two women. I was outside the youth barn at the Skamokawa Fairgrounds, dressed in jeans and a rain jacket. They were in the Shire of River's Bend. One wore a crown and genteel garb from another time, the other in more rugged apparel, apropos of 13th century Scotland. "We're a bunch of weirdos," said one, a little defensive. I confess, I didn't completely understand the Society for Creative Anachronism, but I absolutely admired the members'...

Thirty-two seniors walked through the doors of Wahkiakum High School last fall, and 32 seniors stood on the stage on Friday night to receive their diplomas. It was a resilient group, according to Class Speaker Lucas Brown, who shared stories of their perseverance with the crowd of friends and family that filled the gym. There was Evan Quigley, who as a youth would not be deterred from supporting his classmates at a football practice he could not participate in after suffering a head injury...

Later, in their regular evening meeting, the council approved a contract to update the town's comprehensive plan by the end of the year, and they met with Department of Ecology Regional Planner Michelle McConnell to go over the final steps to finish the first update of the t...

She also designed the programs for the ceremony. Photos by Diana Zimmerman....
Wahkiakum County commissioners covered a lot of ground when they met Tuesday, discussing issues ranging from a new store to coming community activities. Puget Island resident Kristen Lee questioned the board's commitment to researching the adverse issues that could arise from the opening of a Dollar General store in the Rosedale neighborhood. Lee reminded the board that she had asked them two weeks ago to do the research, especially in regard to potential adverse impacts. She said she learned that the board had received a staff report the same...

The Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners met Tuesday morning to listen to reports and award a bid for the Grays River substation project. Commissioner Dennis Reid had a question about the rates for the Skamokawa water system after being approached by customers. “One of the concerns is why their rate is set the same as Western Wahkiakum System, whose rate is high because of a heavy debt, and this is a system with no debt whatsoever,” Reid said, “That is hard to understand and to expla...

The Naselle High School Class of 2019 graduated in front of a crowd of friends and family on Saturday. Class Speaker Jacob Eaton began by thanking the crowd for all their support over the years. Then he began to reminisce. At one point, he compared his third grade classroom to a black market. "There was a lot of trading going on," he said. "By the end of the year, I'm pretty sure Parker (Dalton) had everyone's school supplies." "I couldn't ask for a better class," Eaton said, comparing them to...
Wahkiakum County officials may take another look at their ordinance governing junk vehicles following complaints from citizens during the past few weeks. Skamokawa resident Ursula Petralia raised the issue at Tuesday's meeting of the county board of commissioners, saying recent visitors had expressed disgust at seeing a property between Cathlamet and Skamokawa covered with junk vehicles. A fence screens the property from a county road, but the vehicles are visible from SR 4. She also expressed concern that the disabled vehicles could be...
