With a record-setting winter finally in the history books, the arrival of spring means drivers in Washington have until Sunday to remove studded tires. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) reminds drivers that state law requires all studded tires to be removed by the end of the day March 31. Starting at midnight on April 1, drivers with studded tires face a $136 fine. Studded tires also damage pavement, so removing them promptly after winter has passed helps preserve state roadways. Tire removal services can get crowded...

I hope you've enjoyed the sunny days we've had, as according to forecasters, it looks like we may have a few Spring showers by the time you read this....
My New Friends the Corvid Family Most people have met corvids yet did not know that was their name. The family of corvids I am referring to is birds of the Corvidae of which there are 120 species worldwide. Commonly recognized in English they are known as the crow family, corvids or the genus Corvus which including the jackdaws, crows, rooks, and ravens, constitutes over a third of the entire family. Where I grew up, I only occasionally saw a raven or a crow and I didn’t know the difference. The reason I became interested is that while I was sl...

Story and photos by Laura Rose The 7th and 8th grade boys basketball teams traveled to Spokane this past weekend to play in the State Tournament. Both teams earned a ticket to go to state by winning multiple tournaments throughout the year. But they picked their heads up and battled in the last two games to win both in tight games both decided by less than five points. They went 2-2...
The first cameras were quite cumbersome, it was a delicate process that involved mixing chemical potions just to develop a single print. Something is truly timeless about taking a photograph, but now-a-days cameras are everywhere. On your phone, in your car, on your TV. The lens has definitely gone through some transitions, but a picture can still say a thousand words. If you have interest in learning about cameras and photography, a new class will start on April 6, 10 a.m. to noon. It is open to the public and will be an ongoing class...

SUNSHINE--This past weekend started out with two of my favorite things: sunshine and no snow! With several days last week ending with very cold, freezing temperatures and a couple of mornings beginning with quite a bit of snow, it was fairly challenging to think spring would be here soon. However, as I'm getting ready to send this in, we're back to rain after a gorgeous beginning on Monday which turned to rain by evening, and the forecasters say we're in for some milder temperatures this week with some clouds, some rain but yet maybe some sun...
Ingenuity in Wahkiakum County People have migrated as individuals, in small groups, and, in many cases, entire peoples have moved their life’s possessions and cultures to new horizons with the intention of creating a better life. Those who settled here in Wahkiakum County brought with them their talents and courage. Those who left their homes from other countries or from the eastern part of the United States braved the new frontiers in the Pacific Northwest. Those who traveled west by wagon train are the ones that fascinate me for several r...

The 25th annual Cathlamet St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take place this coming Sunday on Main Street. The parade started in 1994 with Judy Brawn marching one wolfhound, Misty Rivers Echo, up and down Main Street. It grew slowly for the next few years, and then blossomed after Rick Nelson put a photo on the front page of The Eagle. Since then the parade has often been able to boast of having more Irish wolfhounds than the Portland and Seattle parades – usually between 15 and 20. The parade will assemble across the street from Bank of the Pac...
