While major hunting seasons are closed in summer, hunter education courses continue to run year-round throughout the state. Each year, thousands of Washingtonians go fishing – legally – without a license on "Free Fishing Weekend," scheduled for June 10-11. During those two days, no license will be required to fish or gather shellfish in any waters open to fishing in Washington state. The Coast Guard coordinated assistance for the disabled tug Mauna Loa who became disabled and began to drift towards the Washington coast on May 23. The 113-foot Mauna Loa along with their 320-foot barge were met by the crew of tug vessel Lauren Foss, who took it into tow and is towing the disabled vessel to Port Angeles. After I posted my column last week from California telling everyone how hot it was, the weather took a turn to cooler. The rest of my trip was in the high seventies and low eighties. A crowd showed up for the 13th opening day of the Puget Island Farmer's Market on Friday. There was produce, cheese from two creameries, handcrafted breads, grass fed beef and lamb, homemade jams, live music and more. The farmer's market runs from 3-6 every Friday throughout the summer. Last summer a group of volunteers set off for a tremendous adventure. Their goal was to offer free summer lunches after summer school. During their 26 days of cooking and serving lunches, they encountered wonderful experiences: Sheriff Howie came to visit during lunch, mystery guests surprised everyone, treats were given, and even Santa and Mrs. Claus made an appearance. The Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) is urging horse owners to vaccinate their animals as soon as possible to protect against West Nile virus. “Now is the time to vaccinate for this mosquito-borne disease due to our extremely wet winter and Washington’s history of leading the nation with equine cases of the West Nile virus,” State Veterinarian Dr. Brian Joseph said.
