  • Citizens invited to get involved

    Beau Renfro, DEM Coordinator|Oct 27, 2016

This is the fourth part of my disaster preparedness series, and this week I am going to discuss how you can get involved. In the face of emergencies and disaster, Americans come together with courage, compassion and unity and ask, “How can I help?” There are many ways to get involved, especially before a disaster occurs. Each resident can participate in activities to make their families, homes and communities safer and more prepared. The formula for ensuring a safer and more resilient community consists of volunteers that are trained and inf...

  • Study evaluates juvenile salmon in Columbia tidewater

    Columbia Basin Bulletin|Oct 27, 2016

Juvenile chinook salmon density in shallow habitats downstream of Bonneville Dam is largely due to time of year, but density does differ across habitat types. The best habitats, according to a recent study, included those with higher percentages of tree cover, acceptable dissolved oxygen levels and higher emergent vegetation. The study looked at 63 months of data (2007 – 2012) from two tidal freshwater areas in the Columbia River – the Sandy River delta just east of Portland and a stretch of mainstem river downstream (river mile 68 to 88) tha...

  • Razor clam dig at Twin Harbors canceled

    Oct 27, 2016

Elevated marine toxin levels have prompted the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) to cancel a razor clam dig scheduled to start Friday at Twin Harbors. State shellfish managers already scratched a dig at Long Beach – that was also scheduled to start Friday – due to elevated levels of domoic acid, a natural toxin produced by certain types of marine algae. The toxin can be harmful or even fatal if consumed in sufficient quantities. WDFW will continue to monitor toxin levels on all Washington beaches. The department has ten...

  • Final Mules home game set for Friday

    Kay Chamberlain|Oct 20, 2016

PLENTY NASTY--While some folks were complaining about the fact that the "big one" didn't hit us this past Saturday, there were plenty of folks, like me, that felt like our prayers had been answered when another low formed to the west of the "big eye" and drew enough power from it, that those of us in our area and most up north, did not experience too much damage. There were exceptions of course, like down on the Oregon coast where a tornado hit a couple of towns, and were truly devastated, so that was pretty horrific. For all those folks along...

  • Medicate enrollment health program at JP

    Trudy Fredrickson|Oct 20, 2016

Do we live in the “wild and wilder” northwest or what? This past weekend was certainly an eye opener as to Mother Nature’s power and ferocity. I thought I was prepared for just about everything, but it seems that wasn’t the case as far as my beautiful old walnut tree was concerned. I have no idea how old it was, but as I stood in my living room watching the wind and rain, that monstrous tall tree just decided to lay over into the yard below our house. It was surreal, as if in slow motion. It is like losing an old friend. As I finish up this ar...

  • Building a disaster supplies kit

    Beau Renfro, DEM Coordinator|Oct 20, 2016

This is the third part of the disaster preparedness series and this week I am going to discuss the components you will need to “Build a Kit.” A disaster supplies kit is simply a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency. You try to assemble your kit well in advance of an emergency. You may have to evacuate at a moment’s notice and don’t forget to take these essentials with you. You may need to survive on your own after an emergency. This means having your own food, water and other supplies in suffici...

  • Low returns of upper Columbia River steelhead mean no fishing season

    Oct 20, 2016

A precipitous drop in the abundance of the upper Columbia River steelhead run means there will be no fishing season for them this year in northcentral Washington. Jeff Korth, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) northcentral regional fish program manager, said the run is only 33 percent of the 10-year average of counts at Priest Rapids Dam. The latest forecast anticipates count of 6,300 steelhead at Priest Rapids Dam, far short of the minimum 9,550 fish NOAA-Fisheries requires to allow a fishing season on the mainstem or tributarie...

  • Local tavern now open with new owners

    Kay Chamberlain|Oct 13, 2016

MIXED BAG--Last weekend was a mix of weather, as we had some heavy rain at times, then lighter showers and even some gloomy but yet, dry spells, so we hope you were able to get out during one of those dry times to do those outdoor chores which seem never ending, even during the Fall! The week ahead looks to be a mixture too, but then, afterall, it is October, so we can't expect it to be super nice all the time. As I write this however, the sun is out after a very foggy morning, so we'll enjoy the sun's rays while we can! HURRICANE--Hurricane...
