DRIPPY START--As this week began, we had some light rain, and while my lawn and bushes were thankful, I'm guessing all those that were camping weren't so happy. Those with hay down, were definitely not happy! On the bright side, this moisture keeps our fire danger level on the low side in comparison to half the western states which are burning up, so while it seems like summer isn't acting like summer right now, maybe we just need to count our blessings. While it might not be perfect, it beats fire and flooding and severe drought by a long...
Not that I dislike this cool drippy weather, but I think Mother Nature decided to cancel summer for this year. At least it was nice last Saturday afternoon for Poul and Zenaida Toftemark’s Pig Roast and Potluck. It looked like everyone had a wonderful time, as usual. The Fish Washington license will allow anglers to fish in both freshwater and saltwater and to harvest shellfish and seaweed, and includes endorsements for fishing...

SUNNY BEGINNING--The temperatures here haven't been super hot during this last week of July, which is fine by me, but for those beach and heat lovers, well, it's been sort of disappointing, as we had hotter days in the spring time! As this work week begins, we not only saw a little less sun and cooler temperatures, but we also saw a new month show up! You know what that means don't you? Well, it means everyone with kids will be frantically getting those vacation days figured in their schedule before the kids have to go back to school and fall...
This has been a tough summer on the haymakers in our neck of the woods, never knowing when or if the rain is coming. As I work on this article, we have rain in the forecast, so the farmers are scurrying to get their baled hay under cover before it gets here. It was Wacky Wednesday at the Summer Food Rocks program in the J.A. Wendt Elementary School's multipurpose room and volunteers dressed up to put a smile on the faces of local youth as they served teriyaki chicken. There were 35 kids that day, a big increase from the usual 20-25 that volunteers have been seeing Monday through Thursday. It was loud, bright and happy as the kids chatted, ate, and played together. The volunteers gave out goofy glasses with a mustache and nose to all who attended....

Columbia River anglers preparing for the fall salmon season should be aware of several new rules scheduled to take effect Aug. 1. Approximately 960,000 fall chinook salmon are projected to return to the river this year, well above the 10-year average, said Ron Roler, a Columbia River fishery manager for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) in a July 28 news release. However, some coho and steelhead runs are expected to be down this year. “A big part of the challenge this year is to conserve coho and steelhead while providing a...

The Washington State Department of Health is urging parents to make sure their kids’ immunizations are up-to-date before heading back to school this fall. “Summer is a busy time, and immunizations are often overlooked. Vaccines are critical protection for our children and help keep other kids around them safe from many diseases such as whooping cough and measles,” said State Health Officer Dr. Kathy Lofy. Last school year, 85 percent of kindergartners had all their required immunizations. However, the number of kids with exemptions from recomme...

After weeks of testimony and argument about the Tesoro-Savage oil terminal proposal, at least two things are clear: first, this project will not benefit Washington citizens and consumers, and second, the risk of an oil spill into the Columbia River is too great. "For Washington, this project is all risk and no reward. A remarkable coalition came together to oppose this project—these are the voices of Washington's future," said Kristen Boyles, Earthjustice attorney representing many parties intervening in opposition to the proposed oil t...
Following extensive outreach, the Department of Ecology adopted a water quality rule that safeguards the health of Washington’s people and its economy. The fish consumption rule, as it is widely known, updates Washington’s water quality standards for toxics, establishing how clean our lakes, rivers and marine waters need to be. The standards set pollution limits for businesses and municipalities that discharge wastewater. They are based, in part, on the amount of toxics contained in the fish that people eat from Washington waters and are req...
