An estimated 200,000 coho salmon fry died last week after a generator and pump systems failed at the Kalama Falls Hatchery in Cowlitz County. The salmon fry suffocated March 9 after a generator failed, destroying one pump and damaging two others, which reduced the flow of water to the hatchery’s incubation room, said Cindy Le Fleur, regional fish manager for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). NICE START--As this third month of the new year started, it was pretty doggone nice last Sunday, after a nice day on Saturday to end February as well, so we had a nice weekend after a pretty drippy day on Friday. Redmen Hall will open its season with two weeks of its famous Antique Sale, organized by their antique specialist, Keith Hoofnagle. The Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Crab & Oyster Feed on Saturday March 14. This will be the 30th year for this event. The event will be held at the Norse Hall on Puget Island, just across the bridge from downtown Cathlamet. The Crab & Oyster feed is a fundraising event for the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce. The Castle Rock Men’s Ensemble will perform a concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 15, at St. James Episcopal Church, 1134 Columbia Street, Cathlamet. A reception will follow.
