Fairground Flea Market on Saturday

Skamokawa News

NICE START--As this third month of the new year started, it was pretty doggone nice last Sunday, after a nice day on Saturday to end February as well, so we had a nice weekend after a pretty drippy day on Friday. However, as the skies cleared and the stars came out Saturday night, the temperature gauge dropped below freezing once again, so it was a nippy evening. They say we may have a pretty decent week so we hope that's true as there's a lot of folks out there with the itch to take on some yard projects, etc., so we hope you've got your lawn mower tuned up and those garden tools ready to go! Just remember, those nights are still freezing cold, so those delicate plant starts might want to be inside a greenhouse for awhile yet.

SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from March 5-11 are Sara Fletcher, Jami Rainey, Quin Bassi Sr., Gladys Mace, Mark Whitaker ( celebrating a special birthday this year), Katy Goble, Betsy O'Conner, Mary Johnson, Ray Brooks, Tyler Hoven, Micaela Sause, Sandy Wirkkala, Teah McNally, Rhiannon McNally, Philip Vik, Karlie-Helms Lampitt, Ian Turner, Jean Wallen, Karen Lawrence, Paul Ehrensberger and Amy Bernard. Enjoy those special birthday celebrations everybody!

Happy Anniversary wishes this week go to Brandon and Debbie Chamberlain, Carol and Joe Abeyta, Jake and Hayden Schillios and the Frank Webbs. May you all have enjoyable anniversaries.

Belated birthday wishes to Sue O'Connor who celebrated a milestone birthday last week, as well as celebrating an epic anniversary to boot, so here's to celebrating many more of both!

PLAYING THIS PM--The Lady Mules had a great win over Ilwaco last Saturday at the Regional playoffs in Chehalis, which meant they were headed to the State playoffs in Spokane, so a hearty congratulations to you for making it to state; good job! For those who haven't heard by now, they will be playing this evening, Thursday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m., against Mabton. For those of us who couldn't go over there, have no doubt that we'll be cheering you on. Go Lady Mules, Go!

STARTING TODAY--Redmen Hall is having their Grand Re-opening, with their annual Antique Sale and I was up there last weekend as they began to set up, so head on down here to Skamokawa today, from 10 to 4 both today and tomorrow, and then noon to 4 for the rest of the sale; it ends March 15. There is a vast array of things for sale and I saw a lot of ceramic things, as well as wide variety of other things, so I hope you get a chance to check it all out.

FLEA MARKET--Don't forget that this Saturday means that it's time to head to the Wahkiakum Fairgrounds where they are holding their monthly "Flea Market". Good deals on used items and vendors have things for sale too, so we hope you'll check that out!

THIS SUNDAY--It's that time of year again: Daylight Savings Time, which seems to be detested by most of the people I've been hearing from lately, but like it or not, you will be losing an hour of sleep this weekend, as DST starts this Sunday, March 8. This means setting your clocks ahead (Spring forward) one hour Saturday night before you go to bed, so don't forget or you'll be late for church or work!

NEXT FRIDAY--All members of the Wahkiakum class of 1967 are invited to a gabfest at Applebees in Longview next Friday, March 13 at 1 p.m., and we will celebrate those with birthdays that month. As far as we know, Melvin Brown and Sandy Firkus Quigley were our only March birthdays but if you know of someone else, please give me a jingle so I can add it to our birthday list! If you were ever in our class, stop on by, as it doesn't matter whether you wound up graduating from here or elsewhere, we'd love to touch bases with you again.

CRAB SOON--There's just one more weekend before the big Chamber of Commerce Crab and Oyster Feed at the Norse Hall, so get those tickets today for the March 14 event! Remember, there are three different seatings, so one of them should accomodate your schedule. Also, there will be no Bingo that evening at the hall, so all you Bingo lovers will have to wait until next month to try to win those cash prizes!

HIPSTER--We want to send some speedy recovery wishes to Sharyl Iblings who recently had hip surgery. She has been "gimpy" for awhile now so we're happy to see that she finally went and had this done and along with family and friends, will be able to recuperate at home quite nicely. However, it never hurts to remind these "go getters" to mind their doctor and get healed up completely before diving back into work! Take care Sharyl!

COLUMBIA RIVER KAYAKING--The new 2015 CRK schedule is now available online, so with all the nice weather and spring just around the corner, you might want to get a jump on all the activities that will soon be coming up. To check out all the latest info go to: http://www.columbiariverkayaking.com or you can call them: 360-747-1044. A couple of things coming up however, are the first "Immersion" class which takes place on May 2. This will get the beginner kayaker familiar with all that they need to know to make themselves ready for paddling on the streams and rivers. There are six tours scheduled for April, including half and full day with trips to Price Island and Three Tree Point to name but a couple. Also, in May, they will once again be hosting the Wilderness First Responder course and it will be held at the Skamokawa Grange Hall from May 17-23, with a $50 discount for those who sign up before April 1, so check out the full schedule and make your reservation today!

EARLY EASTER--Don't forget that Easter is real early this year, April 5, so the Wahkiakum Fair Board's Easter Bingo will be held April 3 at the J.A. Wendt multi-purpose room that evening. Around town, there will be Easter Egg Hunts and other things as well, so watch for all the times and places where those events will be happening. It may seem like a ways off, but it will all be here in less than a month and we already know how fast the time has flown by!

SYMPATHIES--We were sorry to hear of the passing of Leroy Beard last week and we send our condolences to his friends and family members. I will never forget Leroy, as "way back when" he would come into Jim's Cafe in Cathlamet where I was working and after his meal, he'd ask for some bread pudding; we never had any. It got to be a running joke between the two of us. Years and years later, he came down to the Duck Inn where I was working when Bill and Deanna Simpkins were running the place. I hadn't seen Leroy in years and I'm not sure he recognized me, so when he got done with his meal and he didn't ask for any bread pudding, I slyly said, "Well Leroy, how come you didn't ask for any bread pudding?" He looked up at me in surprise, and then his face lit up in a big smile as he realized who I was and was pretty astonished that I would remember his request from those many years ago but he played along, and asked me once again, "So, do you have any bread pudding today?" Finally, after all those years, I smiled and said, "Well, Leroy, I sure do! Deanna makes about the best bread pudding I've ever tasted, so you've got a bowl full coming right up topped with some whipped cream!" Boy, did he ever light up then and so it was that we got to share a hearty laugh and fond memory together and Leroy finally got that dessert he'd always asked for all those years ago. Here's hoping you're enjoy all the bread puddin' you want in the here-after Leroy!

THINKING OF THEM--The family of Kay and Wayne Cochran has asked for prayers, as Wayne's Dad recently had hip surgery, but as of this writing, he is not doing real well so we will certainly be keeping the family in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

OUT OF THE PAST--This week back in 1945, it began with it being cold and snow falling in the hills and even a bit at the lower levels. The next day it was cold and clear but the rest of the entire week was very wet and miserable. The Wallula Council held a potluck dinner honoring the Great Pocahontas of Washington, who was Mrs. Julia Beatty of Vancouver. It was also a time to honor those with March birthdays, with Mrs. Elsie Everest and Mrs. Adelaide Monroe being the honorees; a great dinner with lots of good food and cake and bingo to end the evening after a short regular meeting. Guests that evening were Mrs. Elinor Weist, who was a past great Pocahontas, and Mrs. Pearl Olson who was a second great scout and Ann Peterson, all from Skamokawa. On Grandma's actual birthday, the family met out at daughter Marian's home for a wonderful dinner and lovely cake. Grandma received some wonderful gifts, like a new lamp and new bedspread and some first violets of the year from Mary Irving, along with a lot of cards and calls, so it had been a good birthday week for her. Grandma Elsie's brother, Dale Walker of Astoria, came to visit the Everests with Mr. and Mrs. W. Stone and their children, along with Mr. W. Lee over the weekend. Mr. Walker had been the manager of the telephone company some 20 years prior.

In 1950, the week began with a terrible wind and rain storm and then a whole lot of snow arrived on the night of March 9, so folks were quite surprised on March 10, when they awoke to a very white world! On Grandma Elsie's birthday, she received a lot of nice gifts and lunched out with daughter Marian and gabbed with long time friend, Nevada Shamley at Mickey's. Sadly, this would be the last time Grandma saw her, as she suffered a heart attack and passed away on March 11. Mrs. Shamley had been the county clerk for years and her co-workers raised a nice sum of money to donate to the Heart Fund in her memory. She was survived by a daughter, Mrs. Georgia Douglas and stepdaughter, Mrs. Leota Canfield and a stepson, Clarence of Calif., as well as four grandchildren. She had been a long time member of the Pocahontas, the Rebekahs and the V.F.W. organizations. She was a true inspiration to all who knew her as she was known for her hard work, friendliness, ready wit, good nature and willingness to give of herself, so she was going to be missed by all who knew her. All this according to Grandma Elsie Everest's diaires.
