The Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball team clinched the Central League championship with a 72-56 win over the visiting Mossyrock Vikings last Friday.
The Mules took control early on and hardly let up. The Mules led 18-6 after one quarter, but Mossyrock closed the gap to 30-23 at halftime as the Mule offense went cold. The Mules exploded for a 24-10 advantage in the third quarter to take full command. With the Vikings focusing their defense on wing Toby David, point guard Travis Bain found a clear road into the key to score or dish off. The Vikings began fouling in the fourth quarter to send the Mules to the free throw line, but the ball went to David and he put them in--15 of 20 for the game--to help the Mules maintain their lead.
David led the scoring with 26 points; Bain had 22 before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Brandon Ferguson scored 10, Ty Briscoe six, Romeo Savant four, and Damien Deaton and Bud Hamman two each.
David made five assists and five steals; and Ferguson had 10 rebounds.
The Mules traveled to Toutle Lake last night (Wednesday) after The Eagle had gone to press; they close the regular season Friday by hosting the Morton Huskies.
The Mules will start district tournament action February 17 in an 8 p.m. game at Castle Rock.
