Mule girls fall to Ducks, Panthers, Vikes

The Wahkiakum Mule girls basketball team played tough at times but couldn't put wins together in Central League action this week.

Tuesday, the Mules lost 58-37 to the highly ranked Toutle Lake Ducks.

With both teams playing tight defense, the game swung back and forth in the first quarter, with the Ducks leading 15-11 at the end of the period. Rachel Fudge started off the second quarter by hitting a three pointer to bring the Mules within 15-14 but that was as close as they got. The pressure of the Ducks' press began to cause turnovers, and the half ended with Toutle leading 26-16, and the Ducks held on to win.

Whitley Wirkkala led the Mule scoring with eight points; Shelby Deaton and Jordyn Wirkkala each had six, Fudge five, Courtney Helms four, and Sara Jespersen, Kristina Heiner, Halie Boyce and Evelyn Clark each had two.

Deaton and J. Wirkkala each had six rebounds; Jespersen and Heiner each had four. W. Wirkkala had three steals and three assists, and J. Wirkkala had three steals.

The game was the last home game for Mule seniors Fudge and Stephanie Johnson.

Monday, the Mules traveled to White Pass and lost 50-38 to the Panthers.

Helms and J. Wirkkala each scored 11 points; Jespersen had six, Boyce and W. Wirkkala four each, and Heiner one.

J. Wirkkala had seven rebounds, Jespersen six and Helms five. W. Wirkkala and Helms each had three steals.

Last Thursday, the Mules lost 65-43 to the highly ranked Vikings at Mossyrock.

The Vikes took a 17-8 first quarter lead and were up 38-17 at halftime.

Helms and W. Wirkkala led the Mule scoring with 10 points apiece; Fudge and J. Wirkkala both had seven, Deaton scored five; Jespersen, Clark, Heiner, Boyce all had two, and Johnson one.

Helms had seven rebounds and three steals; J. Wirkkala had eight rebounds, Heiner made three assists, and Deaton and W. Wirkkala each had seven rebounds.

The team closes the regular season tonight (Thursday) on the road at Morton.
