County Democrats meet, discuss LNG, platform

Wahkiakum County Democrats met in Skamokowa on March 5 amidst news regarding the proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant at Bradwood.

"We discussed the assessment of Columbia River traffic by the US Coast Guard and Rep. Baird’s position opposing the Bradwood site," said spokesperson Krist Novoselic.

"Members reaffirmed our organization's longstanding position – Wahkiakum County, in good faith, needs to submit evidence of any impact of LNG into the filing record as an intervener. Reflecting the county at large, there are diverse opinions regarding LNG within our organization. Regardless of support, opposition, and even some indifference, members are unanimous that the needs of the county must be addressed formally and openly."

The Democrats have begun working on their 2007 platform, and they have decided on a different format this year.

"Instead of speaking to larger state and national issues, we’re going to publish an exclusively local policy statement," Novoselic said. There will be various points that represent Democratic values such as; good government, public support for the well being of all citizens, opportunity and safety."

The party invites all to come to their next meeting, April 2, 6:30 p.m., in the Duck Inn, to give input, Novoselic said.
