The Wahkiakum Mules overwhelmed the Winlock Cardinals 15-1 in five innings in their season opener Monday.
Matt Doumit started and pitched two scoreless innings, giving up no hits and recording four strikeouts, said Coach Jeff Rooklidge.
Travis Bain, Josh Rongey and Ty Briscoe each pitched one inning of relief. Bain had two strikeouts; Rongey and Briscoe each had one strikeout.
Brenden McClain had three hits, including a double, in four at bats, with three runs scored and two runs batted in (RBI). Bain was also 3-4, had three runs scored, two RBI's and two doubles. Rongey doubled and had two RBI's. Briscoe hit 2-4, including a homerun over the left field fence, and had two runs scored and three RBI's. Matt Willette hit 2-3, including a double, with three RBI's. Josh Gerlach hit an RBI single and scored a run.
"Brenden McClain made a great catch down the left field foul line to end the game," Rooklidge said. "McClain really did a nice job in the leadoff position, getting on base three times, and scoring four runs. Matt Willette had a good day in his first varsity action hitting the ball hard and making a nice catch in left field and Bain and Briscoe really hit the ball hard. Ben Doumit did a nice job in his first varsity start as a catcher and threw out the first runner attempting to steal of him."
