Mule golf teamstarts season with wins

Wahkiakum High School’s new golf team has started its inaugural season with three straight wins.

The team of five freshmen and one sophomore includes Cody Olsen, Chase Fritzie, Cole Clausen, Justin McClain, Andrew Weiler and Mike Paulsen. Bill Olsen is coach.

The team overcame windy weather for a 228-243 win at North Beach. Next, the Mules hosted Adna at Skyline Golf Course and won 190-244. Last week, they won 192-218 at Willapa Harbor.

“Our opponents are used to playing flat, wide open layouts,” Weiler said. “We know how to play slopes and elevations.”

Skyline manager Mary Remer said she is pleased to see the team begin competition.

Seeing Wahkiakum have a golf team has been a goal of managers Mary and Mike Remer since they took over Skyline in 2004.

“We are dedicated to the next generation of golfers,” Mary Remer said. “That is why we built the family learning facility. We provide the course at no cost to the teams, and we would like to see more youth get serious about learning this great lifetime sport.”

Remer said the Skyline Men’s Club has donated raingear to the team. The Men’s Club meets at 6 p.m. Wednesdays and invites local men of any skill to join them.
