The Wahkiakum Mule fastpitch softball team closed their 2007 season with a 4-1 win over the Knappa Loggers last Friday.
"The season ended on a great note," said Coach Cindy Fudge. "Shelby Deaton pitched her best game of the season. She struck out 10 batters and gave up only three hits. She did a wonderful job, not only pitching, but fielding her position, too.
"Courtney Helms played tough defense; she was like a vaccuum at shortstop and went 2/3 at the plate."
The Mule defense made several good plays. In the first inning, the Loggers' leadoff batter reached first but was gunned down on a throw from Mule catcher Rachel Fudge to Helms at second base. Second base Hailie Boyce fielded lots of grounders and threw outs to Becky Hoven at first, Coach Fudge said, and in the outfield, Paige Kehrli had some spectacular catches.
"Ending the season on a good game is great," Coach Fudge said. "Knappa is second in their league and a tough team. I'm proud of the attitude and heart our team displayed throughout the season."
