Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891

In support of Sheriff John Mason

To The Eagle,

When Sheriff Howie retired last year, he recommended Sgt. John Mason be appointed. It was a good decision and the Wahkiakum County Commissioners unanimously concurred. Sheriff John Mason now must stand for election to the unexpired term for one year. Sounds crazy but that is the law! The good news is, as voters, we have had time to assess Sheriff Mason’s performance. Not just words or campaign slogans, but how he actually performs on the job!

I knew Sheriff Howie and Undersheriff Howell, but I did not know John Mason. This past year I watched his performance and observed his leadership skills. I have seen how he interacts with deputies and respects the people of the Sheriff’s Office. All-important qualities but the most important, Sheriff Mason has demonstrated his commitment to the community.

He shows a quiet but deep respect for all the citizens of Wahkiakum County. That type of commitment and honesty is earned and comes from generational knowledge. He is well-trained, skilled, and professional but not arrogant. This past year he has demonstrated who he is and how he’ll perform as Sheriff.

Sheriff Mason represents a new generation of leadership for our county; he has roots and the moral compass to lead the Wahkiakum County Sheriff’s Office.
