WCF receives WASA award

May 24, 2007

On May 18, the Wahkiakum Community Foundation received a Community Leadership Award from the Washington Association of School Administrators.

Alan Bennett, Superintendent at the Naselle-Grays River School District, presented the plaque for the award to Karen Bertroch, Foundation Director, at a ceremony in Vancouver. The award letter stated, "This award recognizes the Foundation's extraordinary contributions to education and the dedicated service you provide to the Naselle-Grays River School District. It also acknowledges the Foundation's leadership in the community and the important role it plays as key communicators between schools and the community."

Bennett nominated the Foundation for efforts to provide funding and resources to their students. Over the past year, WCF provided Rob Stockhouse, PhD., as a science resource, employed high school students in a summer habitat restoration project, and provided funding for field trips, sports uniforms, and scholarships for graduating seniors. "The Wahkiakum Community Foundation plays a significant role in ensuring the ongoing success of quality education in our District. The Foundation is to be commended for their involvement and we want to show our appreciation."

Bertroch commented, "This award is very important to the Trustees and is a joy to receive. Nothing is more important to the people of this area than our youth, so the Foundation has made every effort to help provide a high quality education through grants of resources and funding. When we are invited to partner with such an important entity as a local school district, we make that a priority in our efforts. We hope to see this partnership grow and develop even more."
