Mule wrestlers battle, but no state medals

Three Wahkiakum Mule wrestlers won matches but not enough to earn medals at the state Mat Classic Wrestling Tournament last weekend at the Tacoma Dome.

In the 160 lb. class, senior Joel Fudge started the tournament with an 8-6 overtime win over Dustin Taylor of Wilber-Creston. He lost his second round match 15-7 to Niko Knezovich of Reardan; Knezovich went on to place second. In the third round, Fudge lost by fall to Tory Knebel of Pomeroy; Knebel placed third.

In the 189 lb. class, senior Ben Doumit lost his first match to Reardan's Ken Williquette 10-7; Williquette went on to finish third. Doumit lost his next match to Ethan McGee of Pomeroy by fall.

In the 140 lb. class, junior Jeff Vik opened with a 19-2 loss to Ray Tannehill of Liberty Bell; Tannehill placed second in the class. In the second round, Vik beat James Good Lake of Wilber-Creston, winning by fall. In the third round, he lost 12-9 to Wyatt Anderson of Reardan; Anderson placed third in the class.

Overall, the Mules finished 22nd in the team standings with five points. Republic won the team title with 113.5 points.
