March 25, 2010

Norman Anderson prepared his traditional oyster stew for the March 23 Grange meeting. Side dishes and desserts were provided by Grange members in attendance. For those of you who were not there, you missed another great meal.

Following the potluck was the annual Pies for Charity auction. Grangers were asked to bring pies to be auctioned. Monies raised will be donated to the Skamokawa Grange to go towards a new sound system for their hall. Pies for Charity has a long standing tradition with the Grange. It goes back to the days of Franklin D. Roosevelt and raising money for polio. Charities and fund raisers have changed over the years but the need stays the same.

The March 23 regular business meeting began with the Exemplification of the First Degree. The First Degree symbolizes springtime on the farm. Springtime is when labourers are needed and are seeking work on the farm. Megan Agee and Cody Cooley were the candidates participating in the Grange event and at the conclusion of the Exemplification became Grays River Grange newest members. We also welcomed Kurt Steinke as a new member.

Each year the Wahkiakum Pomona Grange purchases dictionaries for the third grade classes at both the Naselle and Cathlamet schools. The Grange is proud to support The Dictionary Project through its Word for Thirds program. Through the tireless efforts of the Grange's network of more than 300,000 volunteers, America's oldest rural and agriculture organization has presented third grade students across the nation with more than 100,000 dictionaries. The National Grange encourages all Granges to present third graders in their communities with dictionaries. With that in mind, Grays River and Skamowaka Grange members will soon be delivering dictionaries to Naselle and Cathlamet third graders.
