What's happening at the Fair?

The Fair & 4-H Rummage Sale was a busy place last Saturday! I watched many happy people carry their “found” treasures out the door. We thank the many people that donated their items to this fund raiser. We will hold another sale in June, the date to be determined.

One of the best surprises last week was when Julie Johnston showed up at the fairgrounds with the Elochoman Valley Partners! They came with their weed eaters and gardening tools, and were ready to work. They worked their equipment around the many buildings and then headed out to work on the Fairgrounds Park. Later, looking for a real challenging project they started weeding the day lilies; it was a jungle. This group of volunteers did an enormous amount of work! Thank you Dan Owens, Dale Holt, Ron Brooks, Russell Halverson and Julie Johnston for volunteering your time and working so hard to help get our fairgrounds looking trimmed up and ready for events. I heard they will even come back and do a bit more to give the fairgrounds that manicured look that the Dollars for Scholars group will appreciate for their event on June 5 at the fairgrounds.

The Helping Hands Food Bank has moved to Cathlamet. We hope the new location will be a good one for the food bank, but we will miss visiting with Mary Dasher and her group each Tuesday!

Every week it seems, I ask people to volunteer their time for projects that need to be done at the fairgrounds or for items we would like to have. A month ago we asked for bird houses, and the Elochoman Valley Partners responded. We now have two bird houses built by Dale Holt, and beautifully painted by Randy Burgher, Ron Brooks and Dale Holt. I hear they are working on several more to donate to the fair also. Thank you!

Big news! We have a handy man for the Fairgrounds. I have been working with volunteer Jeff Beerbower at the fairgrounds for several months now, and am very happy that he has agreed to be our handy man before and during the fair. Jeff will be building, painting, repairing, and running all the fair equipment. We’ll keep him very busy!

Fair Countdown Alert! It’s time to get gardens growing, crafts made, and spend an hour working with your animals each day. The fair is less than 13 weeks away!

The next Wahkiakum County Fair Board meeting is June 9, 7 p.m., T-Building, at the Fairgrounds in Skamokawa. The public is always welcome to attend.

The fair office is open for limited hours in May. If you need to gain access to the fairgrounds contact Lore at 360-849-4315. You can call 360-794-3480 and leave a message on the fairgrounds answering machine.
