What's happening at the Fair?

The Fairgrounds was a busy place last weekend. We had horses in the arena, dogs and cats in the T-building, bargain shoppers in the Youth Building and a concrete pad poured for the exotic barn.

The Dog and Cat Vaccination Clinic was a huge success. Dr. Lisa Bartel had 52 animals brought to her clinic in the T-building! There is one more clinic scheduled for August 7, if you have some questions about the clinic and your animal, call Dr. Bartel at 1-360-484-7228.

The Rummage Sale has been very successful at turning donated items into dollars that will be used to operate the 2010 Wahkiakum County Fair. Thank you for your donations! Our volunteers add some fun to the sale, as they barter back and forth with the customers, if you don’t like a price be sure to make an offer. We had some great volunteers help us arrange the sale items and work at the sale last weekend. Thank you to Commissioner Blair Brady, Ursula Petrolia, Azery Gribskov, Sarah Czarnecki, Sharyl Hjaltalin, Jean Beerbower and Jerry Ledtke.

Attention all beef cattle ranchers in Wahkiakum County and beyond! We need more entries in this department. Bring your cow/calf pairs, steers and heifers to the Wahkiakum County Fair and show us your favorite beef breed. Call the fair office if you would like more information.

Reminder: All animal entry forms are due on July 26. Bring them to the fair office or send them to: Wahkiakum County Fair, P.O. Box 1, Skamokawa, WA 98647.

The exotic animal barn is going to be built! We took our plans and ideas to Mr. Chuck Beyer (County Buildings Section) for approval, and then to the Wahkiakum County Commissioners' meeting. We asked for some funding for the building items we lacked and received their approval. Earlier in the week, Licensed Contractor Ken Gomes from Skamokawa was asked for some building advice by Fair Manager Lore Twiet. Ken listened to her questions, then volunteered his time and skills to do the concrete foundation and build the building. The exotic barn site was leveled, the forms were laid out and the concrete has been poured. Thank you Ken! This week Ken and Fair handyman Jeff Beerbower will be framing the walls. For volunteer information on this project call the fair office.

Can you attend 12 meetings a year, volunteer at multiple fund raising activities year round, be involved in preparing the fairgrounds for our Fair and other events each year? Do you have new ideas for fund raising activities? Like to be a part of specialized committees? The Wahkiakum County Fair Board is searching for a special person to fill an open position on the Fair Board. If that special person is you, give me (Becky Ledtke) a call at 795-3434.

The second Silver Buckle Series Open Game Show will be held on July 31. Need to tune your horse up for the event? We have 2010 horse gate keys you can purchase for $50. You can use the arena year round except for Fair time and scheduled events that will be posted in the arena.

The next Wahkiakum County Fair Board meeting is July 14, 7 p.m., T-Building, at the Fairgrounds in Skamokawa. The public is always welcome to attend.

If you need to gain access to the fairgrounds contact Manager Lore Twiet at 360-431-5247, or you can call 360-795-3480 and leave a message on the fairgrounds answering machine.
