Park grant comes in low

Cathlamet officials learned this week that their grant application to the state Recreation and Conservation Office received a low ranking and likely won't be funded.

The grant would have gone for work on the proposed Queen Sally Park project.

"We ranked 49th on the funding list," said Mayor George Wehrfritz. "The lowest down that list the RCO has ever gone is 42. I had hoped to rank in the low 30s, which would have put us in the running.

"Nevertheless, there are other grants out there, one which we've already identified. The low ranking is a disappointment, but not a death blow to the project by any stretch."

Wehrfritz said he's now planning to go after a state Rural Communities Block Grant.
