September 16, 2010

News from Naselle:

Another win for the Naselle Comet football team over Warrenton last Friday evening with a score of 26 to 12. Keep it up boys.

Sports coming up this week: today (Thursday) – volleyball with South Bend in Naselle at 5:45 p.m .; Friday – football at Raymond at 7 p.m .; Saturday– cross country at Jewell and volleyball tournament at North Beach; Tuesday– cross country at home at 4 p.m., volleyball at Willapa Valley at 5:45 p.m.

The regular school board meeting will be held on Tuesday at 7 p.m. These are public meetings and the community is encouraged to attend.

Last weekend was the annual campout/cookout of the Pacific County chapter of ABATE. It was quite an event with lots of fun, motorcycles, more food than should be legal to consume and just a plain nice weekend with friends. Wahkiakum County Commissioner,Blair Brady was chief cook for the whole weekend and boy did he outdo himself. If you have not eaten his pulled pork sandwiches or his barbecued salmon steaks, you have really missed out. Check them out next year.

ABATE (A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments) is a group of motorcyclists from all walks of life dedicated to “freedom of the road” and to legislation that is fair. They also teach safety and anti drug courses to youth of their local communities. The Pacific County chapter meets on the first Sunday of each month at Hunter’s Inn at 9 a.m.

Other news from the Westend:

Last week the Grays River Habitat Enhancement District met in its regular meeting at which time the commissioners voted unanimously to write a resolution to take steps to protect the landowners in the Kandoll Road and Seal Slough area from more flooding and erosion damage caused by the two 13 foot diameter culverts and cross dikes causing flood water impoundment. After asking the Wahkiakum County Commissioners to declare an emergency on the Kandoll Farm project and have it removed with no results, the district decided to take the issue into its own hands. The resolution is published elsewhere in this edition of The Eagle.

Tonight the Wahkiakum County Fire District #3 will be hosting an open forum at 7 p.m. in the Grays River Grange Hall. This is your opportunity to learn about our volunteer emergency medical services and how you can become a part of giving back to your community. You are a necessary part of this program and more volunteers are needed to cover the response times in case of need, especially during the working hours of the day.

The group is also welcoming those interested in becoming a firefighter as well as an EMT. If you have aspirations of becoming involved in either field, please contact the following people: EMS chief Rick Baliff at 465-2425, Dave White at 465-2504 or Ed Hunt at 465-2433. Free EMT training starts in January.

Looking for some really enjoyable entertainment? Join Carl Wirkkala and friends with special guest Gene Quillhaugh in concert on September 18 at the Valley Bible Church which is located at 4723 SR4 West in Rosburg. The music starts at 7 p.m. Admission is free but donations are gladly accepted. Bring your friends and family and enjoy.

The annual Covered Bridge Dinner is just around the corner. It will be held this year on October 2. Tickets are available at the Extension office in Cathlamet or on the Westend at the Bank of the Pacific. Prices remain the same as last year at $35 for regular admission and $25 for Grand Americans and Veterans. If you wish to reserve specific seating please call 360 795-3278.

Parking is available at Johnson Park again with shuttles running to the Covered Bridge, as there is little parking at the dinner location. An auction will also be held with all the proceeds going to 4-H. This is always an outstanding and unique dinner, so make plans early and seating in limited.

The Rosburg Community Club will resume their regular monthly meetings beginning tonight at 7 p.m. Meetings take place on the third Thursday of each month. Check out the new coat of paint and repainted sign. It looks great.

The Rosburg Club is a very important group in our little community as they do much to make the area better. The club maintains the building and rents it out for many functions including meetings, parties, weddings, senior lunches and many other events. They maintain the Rosburg Cemetery, and give scholarships to our local youth. Why not join in and be a part of this great group. Come to a meeting and give us a try.

I had the pleasure of seeing for myself, just what a fighter Dan Anderson is. He was at the local grocery store with his daughter, Shannon on Monday and you would never know he had been in critical condition just a couple of weeks ago. He says he’s doing fine, making real progress, by doing his exercises and walking. It was great to see him doing so well.

Happy new grandparents, Alan and Penny Gregory of Rosburg are celebrating the birth of their new grandson Gabe William Gregory. The little man was born on September 13 to Chad and Mandy Gregory in Libby, Mont., weighing 6 lbs. 4 and ½ oz, and 19 inches long. His older siblings include sister Trinity and brothers Marshall, Corey and Donovin. Congratulations.
