Mules claim district championship

The Wahkiakum Mule golf team captured the district championship for the fourth time in five years in a nail biting, nine stroke victory over Northwest Christian 733-742.

The 36 hole, four man score includes a second day 27 hole marathon after day one was halted due to rain after just nine holes.

The Mules qualified five players for state for the first time, grabbing five of the allotted 18 slots from the district for the Class 1B/2B state tournament. The Mules placed sixth in the 2010 state tournament.

Leading the Mules at district with a third place finish was sophomore Peter Weiler, 174, and, in fourth place, sophomore Brook Calvert, 180.

"Brook is the only player returning to the state golf championships for a second year in a row," said Coach Nick Vavoudis. "Sophomore Bradley Peek's 188 was good for sixth place; sophomore Brysen Coleman's 191 finished him at 10th, and freshman Austin Good grabbed 16th place with a 196."

The Mules travel to Lakewood on May 24 and 25 for the state tournament.
