Port 2 holding reception to honor Carlton Appelo

December 1, 2011

Port District No. 2 will hold a public reception December 11, 1-4 p.m., at the Grays River Grange to honor Carlton Appelo, the state's longest serving port commissioner.

In 1966, Appelo, Bob Larson and Ture Oman began work to establish a port district not included in the boundaries of Port District No. 1. Appelo has served on the board of commissioners of Port 2 since it was created.

During that time, the port district has grown Skamokawa Vista Park to over 70 acrs with 50 camp sites; Svensen Park boat launch on Puget Island is open, and work continues on the Oneida/Grays Bay buoy system.
