Mules boys win 2 of 3 to gain momentum

February 2, 2012

The Mules trailed 8-7 early on against Morton-White Pass Tuesday night, but that was MWP’s only lead of the night as the Mules nonchalantly rolled to a 63-44 victory over the visiting Timberwolves in the Mules' final home game of the season.

The Mules had a balanced night of scoring as Lars Blix (13), Wyatt Parker (10), and Chris Bilgic (10) all cracked double digits and John Chambers, Yannik Kruetter, and Brett Chaput netted eight apiece.

The Mules’ zone defense didn’t force many turnovers but did do a good job of limiting shot attempts from in close as they forced the T’wolves to take 50 percent of their shots from beyond the arc. The Mules, on the other hand, worked the ball inside well for 42 of their 63 points. Chambers handed out a team-high eight assists and picked up four steals while Kruetter grabbed seven rebounds and had three blocks. Blix and Chaput each pulled in six boards.

Saturday night’s game against Toutle Lake featured two of the best defensive teams in the Central League, however, neither defense was all that effective as the game turned into a run-and-gun shoot-out.

The Mules came up just short as they fell to the Ducks 75-73 on a pair of free throws with 5.3 seconds left, free throws that were awarded after Chambers swiped, apparently cleanly, the ball away from Toutle’s guard near half court and was on his way to a game-winning layin when he was whistled for a reaching foul on the steal.

Parker led the Mules with 20 points to go with five boards and four assists. Blix and Peter Weiler added 14 apiece and Weiler collected a team-high eight rebounds and four steals. Chambers scored seven more, dished out five assists and nabbed four steals. Bilgic, Chaput and Kruetter each had six points.

Last Thursday, the Mules went on the road and handed the Napavine Tigers a 59-44 defeat. Parker and Blix led the way for the Mules with 22 and 16, respectively, while Chambers and Bilgic added six apiece. Chambers handed out seven assists and Blix grabbed six rebounds.

The Mules (14-5, 9-4) close out the regular season tonight (Thursday) at Pe Ell and will enter districts as the #3 seed.

The junior varsity squad completed a clean sweep this week, beating Napavine 50-38, Toutle Lake 46-45 and Morton-White Pass 59-54. Shane Souvenir led the Mules with 15 points against MWP with Travis Wegdahl chipping in 13. Steven Doumit and Austin Good added eight apiece, Seth Doumit seven, Brandon Budd and Mitchel Dault three each, and Collan Riley two. Souvenir and Steven Doumit each grabbed seven boards.

Souvenir led the charge over the Ducks with 19 points while Wegdahl and Seth Doumit added eight apiece, Steven Doumit six, Good three, and Dault two. Wegdahl pulled in 12 rebounds.

Against the Tigers, Wegdahl led with 14, Souvenir added 10, Dault seven, Steven Doumit six, Budd five, and Riley and Seth Doumit four each. Steven Doumit grabbed 10 rebounds.

The “C” team went 2-1 this week with wins over Toutle Lake (21-15) and Morton-White Pass (22-20) and a loss to Napavine (24-16). Riley scored eight points to lead the way against the Tigers with Colton Pfenniger adding five and Bradley Peek three. Brady LaBerge netted 11 against the Ducks, Budd eight, and Riley two. LaBerge scored eight against MWP, Peek and Budd added five apiece, and Pfenniger and Jamey Gehrman added two each.
