Senior Blayne Edwards was the only Wahkiakum Mule wrestler to win his first round match at the 2012 State Mat Classic Wrestling Tournament today in Tacoma.
Edwards won a 16-0 decision over Warden's Rodolfo Gonzales in the 113 lb. weight class. Edwards will face sophomore Brandon Medina of Brewster in the second round. The winner wrestles for the championship; the loser moves to the semifinals of the consolation bracket.
In the 120 lb. class Mule freshman Luke Stacey lost by fall to junior Tyler Osborn of Mary Walker. Stacey will face Jimmy Denis of Tacoma Baptist in the second round late Friday afternoon. The winner advances to the semifinals of the consolation bracket; the loser is out.
In the 126 lb. weight class, Mule sophomore Mason Mackey lost by fall to Justin McMillian of Liberty Bell in the first round. Also, Mule freshman Alex Johnson lost 6-0 to senior Cody Erickson of Liberty/Spangle. The two Mules will face each other in a loser out match with the winner advancing to the consolation semifinals.
In the 138 lb. weight class, Mule sophomore Brandon Burdick lost by fall to senior Daniel Stauffer of Davenport. Burdick will wrestle sophomore Jimmy Garcia of LaConnor in the second round.
Finally, Nate Cothren, another Mule sophomore, lost by fall to senior Jacob Moore of Pomeroy. Cothren will face freshman Walter Harris of NW Christian/Colbert in the second round, with the winner advancing to the consolation bracket semifinals.
