Mat Classic update

Wahkiakum Mule Blayne Edwards will wrestle for the championship in the 113 lb. class this evening at the 2012 State Mat Classic Wrestling Tournament today in Tacoma.

After winning his opening round match, Edwards, a senior, defeated sophomore Brandon Medina of Brewster in the second round by a score of 6-4. Edwards will face freshman Kain Feltwell of Liberty/Spangle in the championship this evening. Edwards won the 103 lb. class championship last year.

Mason Mackey and Nate Cothren advanced to the consolation bracket semifinal matches in their weight classes, but other Mule wrestlers were knocked in the consolation bracket.

In the 120 lb. class Mule freshman Luke Stacey lost by fall to junior Tyler Osborn of Mary Walker and by a 5-0 score to senior Jimmy Denis of Tacoma Baptist in the second round.

In the 126 lb. weight class, Mule sophomore Mackey lost by fall to Justin McMillian of Liberty Bell in the first round. Also, Mule freshman Alex Johnson lost 6-0 to senior Cody Erickson of Liberty/Spangle. The two Mules faced each other in a loser out match with the winner advancing to the consolation semifinals, and Mackey topped his teammate by an 8-4 score. He faced sophomore Kodie Horn of Lake Roosevelt in the consolation bracket semifinal early on Saturday..

In the 138 lb. weight class, Mule sophomore Brandon Burdick lost by fall to senior Daniel Stauffer of Davenport in the first round and again by fall to sophomore Jimmy Garcia of LaConnor in the second round.

In the 145 lb. class, Cothren, another Mule sophomore, lost by fall to senior Jacob Moore of Pomeroy in the first round. Cothren defeated freshman Walter Harris of NW Christian/Colbert 6-5 in the second round and faced senior Kaare Anderson of Reardan the consolation bracket semifinals.
