Seniors vouchers available for local Farmers' Market

Wahkiakum seniors will have the opportunity to receive Senior Farmers' Market Vouchers this year at a distribution held at the Two Island Farmer’s Market, located at 59 W. Birnie Slough Rd on Puget Island on July 27. Distribution will begin at 3 p.m. by Lower Columbia CAP’s Senior Nutrition Program personnel.

The vouchers are funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and administered locally by Lower Columbia CAP in partnership with the Southwest Washington Area Agency on Aging and Disabilities.

Eligible seniors for the vouchers are those individuals age 60 and older, or age 55 and older if Native American or Alaska Native Elder with a monthly income of $1,723 or less if single, and $2,333 or less in a two person household, and a resident of Washington State. Photo identification is required and vouchers will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.


Eligible seniors will receive $40 worth of vouchers that can be used to buy fresh fruits, vegetables and edible herbs at participating farmers’ markets through the end of October 2012.

Chamber seeks Bald Eagle Days volunteers

The Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce is seeking volunteers for its Bald Eagle Days celebration and Wooden Boat Festival on July 20-22.

Those interested in helping or who have ideas to share can meet at the chamber office at the Julia Butler Hansen House in Cathlamet on July 10 at 5:30 p.m. or contact Lynda Gerlach at wchamber@cni.net or 795-9996.


CPR class July 20

Elder Options will hold a CPR class on July 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

This four-hour class covers the new American Heart Association Basic Life Support for healthcare providers. The class also covers adult, child/infant CPR with automatic external defibrillation, one and two person rescue, and adult, child/infant choking.

Upon completing the class, students will receive a two-year certification ID card. Class size is limited; reserve a seat by calling (360) 636-1000 or (800) 608-2388. Elder Options is located at 872 15th Avenue, Longview, across the street from PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center. Cost for the class is $55 with a book and $40 without a book.


Red Cross plans

summer events

On July 10 Red Cross Emergency Services of Southwest Washington will conduct a training session from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Rosburg Community Center. Classes will include Disaster Overview, a Disaster Action Team workshop, and Client Casework.

On July 21, they will participate in the Bald Eagle Days Parade in Cathlamet as well as the Rosburg community barbecue and on August 6, they will conduct a training session from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Rosburg Community Center. The classes will be Shelter Operations and Shelter Simulation. Local citizens interested in participating should email kelly.anderson@redcross.org.


Redmen Hall exhibit

focusses on Pacific NW

Redmen Hall will begin the summer season with an exhibit of work by four members of the Lower Columbia Artists' Association entitled Art from a Northwest Life.

Works by Mitzi Christensen, Alan Brunk, Nancy Knowles and Ramona Lauzon depicting the artists' visions of the Pacific Northwest will be on display from July 7 until August 12. A reception for the artists will be held July 8 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the hall.

The St. James Family Center has the following classes planned for its Youth Adventure Program for the week of July 9-13:

Photography, July 9, 10 a.m. to noon, ages six to 12, $5.

Design Your Own Birdfeeder, July 9, 1-2 p.m., ages seven to 11, $4.

Basics of Golf, July 10 and 12, 10-11:30 a.m., ages seven and up, $15.

In Their Shoes: Teens and Dating Violence, July 10, 1-3 p.m., ages 12-15, free.

K-9 Demo and Gun Safety, July 11, 2-3 p.m., ages four and up, free.

Love-Talk-Play, July 11, 4-5 p.m., up to five years old, free.

Gramma's Kitchen, July 12, 2-4 p.m., ages five to nine years, $3.

Field trip to playdate, July 13, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., ages six to 12, $20 including lunch.
