Work begins soon to

make county roads safer

Construction workers will begin work under a federal grant to improve safety on Wahkiakum County roads in two weeks.

Coral Construction and their sub-contractors will start on improving the cross-slope of a curve on Beaver Creek Road on September 17. Motorists are asked to use caution through the work zone as they are flagged through the area.

Later this month, workers will remove old signs and install new signs that meet modern safety standards for night time visibility.

Meeting on elk hoof disease Monday

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is holding a public meeting from 6-8 p.m., on September 17, in the Cowlitz PUD auditorium, 961 12th Ave., in Longview to share information about reports of hoof disease among southwest Washington elk. It will include a brief presentation about the elk hoof disease, followed by a question-and-answer session.

WDFW is also providing an online reporting tool for citizens to report affected animals (http://wdfw.wa.gov/conservation/health/hoof_rot/). The site offers information on the disease, as well as the reporting tool for those who observe elk with signs of hoof disease.

Friends of Skamokawa honor Rasmussen family

Redmen Hall will honor the Rasmussen family for their contribution of land next to the Hall on September 15 from 2 - 4 p.m.

The family has owned the land adjacent to the east side of Redmen Hall from the 1940s and they have decided to honor the Friends of Skamokawa Foundation by donating it.

Gerald Rasmussen and his cousin Peggy Long will be in attendance with their families to hand over the deed and a plaque commemorating the donation will be dedicated during the reception.

Refreshments will be served.

Wahkiakum Youth Baseball plans merger

The Board of Directors of Wahkiakum Youth Baseball (WYB) will hold an informational meeting regarding the mergers of Central Youth Baseball and Western Youth Baseball of Longview into one new club, Longview Cal Ripken.

The presentation will be held September 17, 6:30 p.m. at the AWPPW Union Hall on 15th Avenue next to the YMCA in Longview. It will address the reasons for combining the two Longview based Cal Ripken ball clubs and be an open forum to address questions regarding the merger.

Wahkiakum Youth Baseball will affiliate with the merged club in the same fashion that it has been affiliated with Central Youth Baseball for the last six years. For more information regarding the merger, contact Todd Wilson at tdwilson@centurytel.net or by phone in the evenings at 795-0075.

Booster club meeting

set for September 18

A Wahkiakum Booster Club meeting will be held September 18 at 6 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.

The group will help both the Mules and Lady Mules and other activities with fund raising for Wahkiakum.

There will be a sign up sheet for the booster club at the Mule football game on September 14. Membership dues are $50 and will include a booster T-shirt.
