The Wahkiakum County Eagle - Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891

Here's a report from Wahkiakum cross country Coach Marie Riley:

It has been a busy time for Wahkiakum cross country. We have attended from Kalama to Lacey, with Wahkiakum in between. We've enjoyed mild weather conditions for all of our meets so far this year and it is a welcome relief. Last year we weren't so fortunate.

Kalama is our toughest meet of the season as it has a long grueling uphill, then more climbing as you enter the woods. Middle school is lucky enough to only have to do the loop once, but the high school has to repeat it, and the second time can be a killer.

The middle school girls came up against a strong LaCenter team, which had six girls in the top ten. We took second place as a team behind them. Shona Heywood finished as our top runner in fourth place with Mya Kirzy, sixth, Aly Kirzy, 13th, Trynity Mendez, 15th, Kaylin Bingham, 21st, Katie Stacey, 22nd, Ayesha Ahmed, 30th, and Kyrah Scuito, 31st.

On the high school girls side, the home team, Kalama, ran away with the girls team title at their own meet; placing five girls in the top ten. Rory Heywood was eighth this day, and Jenna McEntire was 16th. Shelbie Abbott has been having asthma flare ups and had to take another race off. She tried to run in our home meet the following week but again had to drop out. Jenna came in 19th this run, but she was also battling cold symptoms.

At our home meet on October 2 Wahkiakum ruled! The girls showed their superb ability by placing 1, 2, 3; Shona, Mya and Aly. Trynity came in eighth, Katie, 12th, Kaylin, 16th, Kyrah, 19th, & Ayesha, 20th.

October 4 found us in Lacey, at St. Martin's University for the Bill Kehoe Invitational sponsored by NW Christian. As always happens, it was a large meet, with 17 schools in attendance. Once again, the middle school girls were queens of the course. They took first place as a team, with Mya taking third and Shona taking fourth. They both received medals for their effort. Results were unavailable for the rest of the team, but they all put forth a great effort. Shelbie ran a full race and finished 33rd.

In the high school boys race, our guys continue to plug along. They try for personal records every week and put in a good effort. At Kalama, Luke Stacey was our highest placer finishing 29th. Jr. Ramirez was close behind in 32nd, and Nevan Bingham came in 51st.

At our home meet, they came up against some lightning fast competition, for the third time this season. They were able to post much faster times this meet, but they also didn't have that killer hill.

On October 4, in Lacey, Jr. had a goal to stay with Luke. He did really well up until about the last half mile, and started falling behind. He made up for it, though, with his dynamic finishing sprint. They all did great!
