National Weather Service seeking spotters: The National Weather Service (NWS) is in the process of conducting training for volunteer weather spotters in northwest Oregon and southwest Washington and has scheduled a training session for December 11, 6-7:30 p.m. at the Cathlamet Fire Hall, 255 2nd Street, Cathlamet. The training is for people who want to become part of the NWS network of volunteer weather spotters as well as refresher training for existing weather spotters. They will be trained how to recognize cloud features and other weather phenomena that can produce severe weather as well as the criteria for reporting these elements to the NWS office. As part of the Skywarn program, volunteers may be contacted by the NWS for "ground truth" as to what is actually happening in their communities, most to confirm an indication of potentially severe thunderstorms, like large hail, or damaging wind. Other calls may be to verify heavy snowfall or peak wind speed associated with large winter storms. This information is directly used in the NWS warning program to help protect lives and property. The training is free and open to the general public. On the Net: http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/pqr/skytraining.php.
