Young Mule cross country team loves to run

September 11, 2013

Seven high school students and two middle school students have turned out for Wahkiakum cross country this year. Marie Riley, who took up running when she volunteered to help with the track team, is in her third year as head coach.

There are no seniors competing this year, and the young team took part in their first meet on Monday at the LaCenter Jamboree, running the middle school course distance of one and a half miles. No one placed in the top 10, but all finished.

According to Riley, Elliott Haney turned out for a little friendly rivalry with his pal, Luke Stacey. “He’s determined to beat him,” Riley said. Haney might just give Stacey some competition this season.

“He’s got the build for a runner--there’s nothing to him,” Riley finished, alluding to Haney’s lean frame.

Team members this year are Shelby Abbott, Nevan Bingham, Haney, Nathan Hargrove, Allie Kirzy, Maya Kirzy, Trynity Mendez, Kyra Scuito and Stacey.

The runners' next meet is September 19 at Onalaska and their only home meet this season will be October 4.
