The Wahkiakum Mules outscored the Onlaska Loggers 36-28 in Central League football last Friday.

The Mules scored at the end of the third quarter to go up 36-28 and controlled the ball for the fourth quarter to win their hardest game so far this season.

The Mules’ score could have been higher, Coach Eric Hansen said.

“We didn’t finish them off when we had them down,” Hansen commented.

The game ended with the Mules kneeling the ball down just outside the Logger endzone instead of punching in another touchdown.

The Mules started the scoring at 9:11 in the first quarter on a 30-yard pass from Gunnar Blix to Travis Wegdahl. Austin Good scored the conversion for an 8-0 Mule lead.

The Mules scored again after Onalaska fumbled the kickoff and Nathan Cothren recovered. Blix scored on a one-yard plunge at 5:46, and Good again scored the conversion for a 16-0 Mule lead.

Onalaska scored at 4:47 of the second quarter to cut the lead to 16-6. Nathan Cothren scored on a 30-yard run with 2:08 left in the first half for a 22-6 lead, but Onalaska cut the lead to 22-14 on a 27-yard pass play with 36 seconds left.

The Loggers started the third quarter with a three-yard touchdown run at 10:36, and the two point conversion tied the game at 22-22.

The Mules came back with a quick drive which Mason Mackey capped with an 11-yard touchdown run at 7:56. The conversion try failed, leaving the score 28-22.

The Loggers responded with a 61-yard pass play; the conversion failed, leaving the game tied 28-28 at 5:50 of the third quarter.

The Mules took the lead with 3:01 left in the third quarter. Cothren shredded the Logger defense with a 45-yard run, and Mackey scored the conversion for the 36-28 final score.

The Mules then ran out the clock, holding Onalaska to four rushes and four passes for 17 yards of offense in the fourth quarter while running the ball 18 times for 118 yards and throwing four times for five yards on one completion.

The Mules dominated the game offensively, rolling up 526 yards on offense, 359 on the ground and 167 in the air. Onalaska had 145 yards on 21 runs and 150 yards on six passes.

Cothren led the Mule running attack with 123 yards on 13 carries; Good gained 113 yards on 14 carries; Mackey had 109 yards on 15 runs, and Blix picked up 22 yards on seven carries.

Blix completed nine of 14 passes for 161 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions. Good caught four passes for 52 yards; Wegdahl had two catches for 80 yards and one touchdown; Mackey caught two passes for 32 yards, and Seth Doumit and Brandon Budd each caught one pass.

On defense, Blix led in tackles with 11; Mackey, Shane Souvenir and Dylan Hansen each had eight; Trystan Mendez seven, Wegdahl six, and Cothren five. Good made three tackles, recovered a Logger fumble, and intercepted a Logger pass.

The 5-0 Mules host the Napavine Tigers this Friday at 7 p.m. The 4-1 Tigers lost their first game of the season last Friday to 5-0 Morton/White Pass by a 41-7 score.
