Skamokawa writer publishes poetry

October 9, 2013

“The Family that Never Threw Anything Away” is the title of author Irene Martin’s new book.

Well-known for her historical research and publications, this new work is a departure from her usual non-fiction and is a small volume of poetry on the subjects she is best known for: salmon, fisheries, history and spirituality.

The title refers to the traditions, customs and objects handed down from immigrant ancestors that continually rework themselves into the lives of those in succeeding generations. The poems range from formal structured pieces, including three villanelles, to free verse and prose poems. The book also contains photographs that amplify the mood created by each poem.

“I have always written poetry, right from early childhood,” says the author. “I thought it was time to put my best poems in print. Publishing poetry is a real emotional risk – you are putting your heart and soul out there in the hope that what you have created will resonate for others.”

“The Family that Never Threw Anything Away” is available from the author, P.O. Box 83, Skamokawa, WA 98647. Retail price is $8.95, plus $.68 tax and $2.75 shipping and handling. Checks only.
