GR Valley Center has new coordinator

News from Naselle:

Looks like the biggest news from Naselle this week comes in the fact that SR 4 now has a detour allowing folks to eliminate a long drive in order to get to the coast. If you still have questions about the roads and detours, I’m sure you could contact the Pacific County Sheriff’s office or Washington State Patrol. It looks like an expensive fix to take care of the washout that occurred during our last rain event.

Sports calendar for the Naselle Comet teams this week includes: Friday, JV girls basketball with Astoria at 3:30 p.m., JV boys basketball with Oakville at 4:45 p.m., varsity girls basketball with Oakville at 6 p.m. varsity boys basketball with Oakville at 7:30 p.m .; Tuesday, JV boys basketball with Wishkah at 5:45 p.m., middle school boys basketball at Valley at 5:45 p.m., varsity girls basketball with Wishkah at 7:45 p.m .; Wednesday, middle school boys basketball with South Bend at 5:45 p.m. Go Comets!

There will be no school on Monday for Martin Luther King Day.

Westend news

Other news from the Westend:

This is it, another big game Sunday, January 18, and the Johnson Park Advisory Board is hosting our annual 3 C’s Chowdown in the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park 1-5 p.m.Your choice of home made chili, clam chowder and chicken noodle soup.

We realize there are lots of folks out there who would rather be at home watching the football game, so we have decided to help out the cook in the family. If you bring your own containers, you can take your chili, chowder or soup to go. How easy is that? We start serving at 1 p.m. and go until 5 p.m. If you come early, you won’t miss any of the game.

An added request, if you come during the game please don’t give the score or any play by play as there are a few of the volunteers who will be watching the game later.

Your generous donation for this delicious meal will go a long way to fund some of the operating expenses of the center. Thank you in advance.

A blood drive is scheduled for January 23, 12:30-6 p.m. at the Valley Bible Church. Help them reach their new goal of 50 units. It could be you or one of your loved ones who might need blood in an emergency situation, so let’s make sure there is plenty of it available. For more information, call Susan Burkhalter at 465-2264.

I understand there are a few tickets still available for the annual Crab and Oyster Feed being held on Saturday, January 31, from 6 p.m. to midnight. Sponsored by the American Legion Deep River Post #111, this event is usually a sellout with only 200 tickets available. Advanced tickets are on sale now for $28 per person. For the dance (9 p.m. to midnight) only, the price is $5 per person.

Dinner includes crab, oysters, baked beans, potato salad, cole slaw and garlic bread. There will be a drawing for very nice raffle items after dinner, followed by the dance at 9 p.m

For more information or to purchase tickets please contact: Ken Elliot at 465-2274, Judith Emmick at 465-2680 or Dale Rose at 465-2234.

The West End Food Pantry is open on Thursdays in the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park on the north end of the building. Their hours are 1-5 p.m. Non perishable items can be left at that location or cash donations can be mailed to PO Box 55, Rosburg, WA 98643.

Aerobics is a fun exercise program, and you can become a part of one. Please contact Jeanne Bramen at 465-2544, and join in the group. They meet on Monday, Wednesday and Friday 6-7 p.m. in the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park in the gym.

Don’t forget the Free Friday Night movies shown every week in the Grays River Valley Center at 7 p.m. on our big screen in the cafeteria. Good fun with good folks. Concessions are available with popcorn, candy and pop.

The Johnson Park Advisory Board now has a working events coordinator, Toni Fest. Toni is the person to call if you would like to schedule an event or reserve a room for a meeting or party. She is our “keeper of the calendar” so if you have any questions about what is happening at the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park, she is the one to call at 465-2393. If you can’t reach Toni for some reason, you can still call me at 465-2960 as well and I can relay a message for her to call you back.

We would like to thank everyone for your patience and understanding during our reorganization of board members for the past few months and hope to be a little more organized and available to the public from now on.

Check out the calendars in the hallways of the center for ongoing and special events. Family/single sponsorships are available to you for $69 per year (family members who reside in your household) and $49 per year for an individual. This fee allows you to have access to the exercise equipment and the gym at any time - 24/7, and will provide you with confidential codes to gain access to these rooms.

Our library and computer center are open 1-5 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and we hope to expand those hours shortly.

You can join Donna Moody on Thursdays from noon to 4 p.m. if you are interested in anything to do with sewing. She is an excellent seamstress and teacher. Our sewing room is equipped with sewing machines and a huge cutting table as well as Donna’s expertise.

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) meets each week at 2 p.m. in the meeting room next to the Food Pantry.

This Grays River Valley Center belongs to the community and we hope you enjoy yourself when you visit, bring a friend next time, volunteer an hour or two. Help us grow and become more than we already are. Thank you for your support and your ideas—together we can make it happen.
