NICE BEGINNING--As the week begins, our Sunday morning was nothing but socked in fog for quite some time, but by lunch time, we had some nice sunshine, so that was quite enjoyable. I understand many parts of the area had sunshine on Saturday as well, but out here in West Valley, we didn't see any of it as it was gray and gloomy all day, so those who were elsewhere were quite lucky. After a brief rainy period, forecasters say we'll be in for more dry weather as the first month of this new year comes to an end.

SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Jan. 29-Feb. 4 are Kyle Gribskov, Varsha Martin, KC Garrison, Grant Johnson, Hailey Hoven, Nicole Emery, Jamie Helms, Alyssa Montgomery, Emma Rose Lindsey, Kathy Tarabochia, Irene Getty, Maddux Moore, Troy Kyle, Alexis Baldwin, Madilyn Freeman and Pamela Everest Priestly. Happy Anniversary to Mr. and Mrs. Hoby Thacker, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Ower and Mr. and Mrs. Dan Cothren. Enjoy your special days everybody!

I don't have all the details yet, but fellow classmate, Kathy Bond Peek, is a grandma again with identical twin boys born into the family recently. They came a little early but they are doing great and she can hardly wait until they get home and she can go to visit. Congrats to the whole family!

CRAB FEED THIS SAT--It's early this year, but they say the crab are in, so I hope you're planning on heading to the Rosburg Community Hall and enjoy a wonderful evening of crab and oysters, potato salad, beans, cole slaw and garlic bread for $28. This event is a fundraiser for the Ameican Legion, Deep River Post 111, so it's a worthy cause, as well as being a lot of fun. There's a happy hour, a dinner hour, the drawings for an array of prizes and of course, the dance after the tables are cleared off. I understand the "Vintage Gypies" will be there to perform for you, so hopefully they know the "chicken dance" song, as that is a local favorite and everybody gets up and dances to that--a real hoot! Get your tickets right away as the fun begins at 6 p.m. this Saturday evening. Be there!

LOGGERS REUNION--Earlier in the day down on the Westend, there will be the "Old Time Loggers Reunion" at the Appelo Archive Center in Naselle, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is the fifth year of this annual event and this year's honorees are Merlin Durrah and Harvey Johnson Jr. There will be cake and coffee provided for those attending and the cafe will be open for those who would like to stay for some lunch. Anyone who has ever worked with these gentlemen is urged to attend and share their stories of their time in the woods. For more information you can contact Samantha Hollo at 360-484-7103.

BIG SB GAME--After a big batch of crab and oysters, the following day will be the perfect time to kick back and watch some football, as the Seahawks take on the Patriots in Arizona this Super Bowl Sunday! Hopefully you'll have an empty spot left for all those Super Bowl snacks and goodies that are sure to be around wherever you go, and maybe they might even include a pizza from Sharon's Pizza and More, as she's going to be open for a limited time that Sunday, so order early as she's heading out the door by 3 p.m.! Of course, you'll be able to enjoy a nice, big screen TV and lots of goodies down at the Duck Inn in the lounge, so check out their specials and "scream for your team" with all your friends down here in Skamokawa!

FEELING BUM--There are several folks who have been under the weather lately, so we send "get well, feel better soon" wishes to Teed P., Gladys S., Becca K., Peggy P., Nancy C. and others that are dealing with an array of issues and hopefully they'll be feeling better soon. Whether you're dealing with "just a cold" or something more serious, we certainly wish you the best while you're not quite up to snuff!

BETTER NOW--It was good to hear from Ronda Rose, who not only celebrated her birthday recently and had a good day, but she was also feeling great after her recent surgery and to top it off, she was found to be cancer free, so that made her birthday even more special. Good news Ronda and we're so happy for you!

MORE LOSSES--We want to send our condolences to a fellow classmate, Sharon Stout Servis, who lost her sister, Beverly Johnson recently. Her entire family has our sympathies. Also, a Puget Island girl that used to ride the bus with the rest of us "slough rats" was Cindy Horne, now Moran, and sadly she has passed away recently at the age of just 61. Her services will be held this Saturday, Jan. 31, at 1 p.m., at the Rose Valley Friends Church with Rick Hayes officiating. The church is located at 1437 Rose Valley Road, Kelso. Our deepest sympathies to the Horne and Moran families and to all those that knew and loved her.

FIRST SATURDAY OF THE MONTH--Don't forget that the Wahkiakum Co. Fairgrounds will be open on the first Saturday of each month for a flea market, so come on down and check that out. If you'd like to take part in this, come and talk to the folks that will be there on February 7.

DOING GREAT--Frank and Carolyn Pedersen had a "proud grandparents" moment recently, when their grandson, Kristian and his robotic team, took fourth place in the state. This was pretty doggone good considering they were one of about 500 teams competing, so to get in that top five was a real feat! Congratulations to Kristian Pedersen and his team mates for their great work!

HAPPENING SOON--Skamokawa Grange #425 will soon be changing their meetings days, so watch for that change as they will be having their meetings on the first and third Tuesdays pretty soon, rather than the second and fourth Mondays as they have been for nine years. They are hoping this change allows for others to join them at the hall on those days. Potlucks are usually held a half hour prior to meeting times of 7 p.m. If you have any questions you can contact Skamokawa Grange President David Blalock at his new business in Cathlamet, Smoky Water Communications by either stopping by or call him at (360) 846-3425.

VALENTINE DINNER--In just a couple of weeks, the Wahkiakum Fair Board is hosting the annual Valentine Diamond Dinner and it will be on Valentine's Day this year, so why not buy a couple of tickets and let Blair Brady and Bill Coons do the cooking for you, while you enjoy a tasty filet mignon dinner with a glass of wine? The beautiful $600 diamond bracelet is the grand prize and it also includes a gift basket with some champagne donated by Lance and Shannon Britt of the Skamokawa Town Center, along with chocolates and other items, so we hope you'll buy lots of tickets at the dinner and up your chances of becoming the big winner. Other items will also be given away. Your dinner ticket gets you one free chance for the drawing, and also a free beverage of your choice with extra wine and beer costing just a few dollars, while the coffee is free and pop and sparkling cider just a dollar. Tickets are just $25 and the funds are being raised for our county fair taking place in August, so we hope you'll show your support and be at the Skamokawa Grange Hall on Feb. 14. Doors will open at 5:30 and dinner will be served from 6 to 7 p.m. If you'd like to help out in some way, contact Susan Rawls at 795-3304.

MESSAGES--Speaking of Valentine's Day, don't forget the special that The Eagle is currently running as you could send a special "heart message" to your loved one, or loved ones, and it would only cost you $10. Whether you're wishing your family a Happy Valentine's Day or a super mushy message to the love of your life, you'll have this special way of doing it up until the Feb. 9 deadline for a very reasonable price.

SERIOUS ISSUES--Recently a meeting was held to hear out the proposal of our county fairgrounds being taken over by Port District 2. This is a complicated issue but there are some things that need to be "set in stone" first before everyone gets too crazed about it all. There's a big difference between "managing" the property and "owning" it, and some things can't be done to it without owning it, but is the county actually selling it? That is the question. And if they sell it, then of course there's no way of knowing if our county fair will go on, as the Port has said they want to put businesses in some of the buildings and you can't have a fair when part of the buildings would be taking up exhibit space. At any rate, nothing has been settled yet and there are many things to be determined but when the time comes for a big community meeting about it all, be sure to have put some serious thought into the situation and go to the meeting with level headed thoughts, ideas and questions, as there are many things that would have to be ironed out, whatever they decide to do. With the threat of funding for the fair expiring in 2016, things look pretty dire. On the other hand, we've heard that before and we've always gotten it, so hope is not lost that we can continue with the tradition that has lasted for over 100 years and I would hope could continue for 100 more if people are just willing to pull together. Please remember the upcoming fund raisers for the fair, as they are vital to keeping it going, so they hope to see you at the Valentine dinner described above and at the upcoming Easter Bingo in April. Donations are gladly accepted.
