Sheriff Mark Howie agreed to paint his beard pink if more than 30 people attended Family Night; 64 people showed up for the event, and on Monday, Howie made good on his promise.

Sheriff Mark Howie promised to paint his beard pink if more than 30 people attended Family Night last Saturday in the multipurpose room at J.A. Wendt Elementary School.

Sixty-four kids and adults showed up to make sure he made good on that promise, and on Monday, in front of an audience, seventh grade student Stephanie Hake painted Howie's hairy chin pink, though it looked purple from a distance.

Anna Kuhn, center, paints a tile with her friends at the recent Family Fun Night. The tiles are destined for a community display.

He wore it with pride and good humor for 24 hours, but the bright hue had disappeared by Tuesday.

He only had to wash it three times to get the color out.

The event was sponsored by the Wahkiakum Community Network and hosted by County Commissioner Mike Backman. Representatives from the Lions Club were there, and the Key Club finished off Doernbecher week trying to raise a few more dollars for Doernbecher Children's Hospital.

The theme for family night was "Healthy Choices, Healthy Lives." There were prizes and snacks on hand. The younger participants played organized games and created some of their own while the older crowd painted tiles and chatted.

"It was a blast, and everyone had a great time," Howie told The Eagle.

Plans are in the works to make Family Night a quarterly event.
