Down River Dispatches

August 6, 2015

News from Naselle:

Not much left of summer vacation as school starts again on August 31. Time to start stocking up on school supplies. Football and volleyball practices begin, and the teachers begin their new year earlier than the students. We have had a beautiful summer this year.

Good news from Laura (Mochas & More) Ray, in Naselle. She will be back to her normal hours this week after her surgery six weeks ago. Stop in and enjoy a great coffee drink and some of her extra special treats as well.

Check out some of the interesting wood work being done and sold on premises in Naselle at Northwest Sawyers located at 992 SR 4. Lots of unique items. For more info call 484-3938.

Westend news:

For you folks who regularly use the exercise equipment in the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park, just a note to let you know that the elliptical machine has been repaired. We are hoping that everyone who uses the equipment will help to maintain, use properly and keep clean anything you use. If you have questions, please give me a call.

Our Free Friday Night movie this week features a futuristic twist on Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. It follows restless teen Jim Hawkins on a fantastic journey across the universe as cabin boy aboard a majestic space galleon. Befriended by the ship's cyborg cook, John Silver, Jim blossoms under his guidance and shows the makings of a fine shipmate as he and the alien crew battle a supernova, a black hole, and a ferocious space storm. But even greater dangers lie ahead when Jim discovers that his trusted friend Silver is actually a scheming pirate with mutiny on his mind. Bring the kids, watch on our big screen in the cafeteria of the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park.

The show starts at 7 p.m. and concessions are also available with popcorn, candy and pop. G rated films are always shown on the first Friday of each month.

Last weekend was nearly perfect weather for the annual Pig Roast/Potluck and camp out at the home of Poul and Zinaida Toftemark. They had lots of campers, delicious food and wonderful company. I want to personally thank Poul and Zinaida for their friendship and hospitality, their generosity with their property for the campout, and for all the work they had to do before and after the event. You are truly wonderful people. I hope next year is just as much fun.

Wednesday, August 12 is the next blood drive at Valley Bible Church. Red Cross have given the volunteers 60 slots to fill and they are hoping for 50 units donated. Last time, 50 slots were filled and they reached 37 units donated. As an added bonus for your help, there are always sliders made by April Zimmerman to help regain your strength after the process, and the fun and friendly atmosphere. For more information or to make an appointment please call Susan Burkhalter.

The Grays River Grange Weekly Market will take place every Tuesday, 2-6 p.m. in the Grays River Grange #124 building on SR 4 in Grays River. Purchase locally grown produce for reasonable prices.

The Rosburg Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch meets every week in the Rosburg Hall for a delicious meal and good company. The lunch is prepared and served by Pat Potter and her volunteer crew.

On Thursdays a senior lunch is also served at the same location and is sponsored by CAP. Both venues serve at noon.

We are really enjoying an extended visit with our niece, Sandy Clark who is here from Missouri. She loves the country life but doesn’t seem thrilled with our cell phone reception.

The temperatures are finally getting back to my liking, with cool breezes in the afternoon and cooler nights. I guess we need to enjoy this while it lasts.
