Dan Wilson joins WSD board of directors

August 20, 2015

Dan Wilson was approved to fill a vacant position on the School Board of Directors at Tuesday night’s meeting of the Wahkiakum School District. He will be on the ballot in November for another position, which is uncontested.

“Dan Wilson has expressed a desire to join the board,” Superintendent Bob Garrett said. “Dan is willing to come on early and fill that role for a few months and after the election he would resign and take his new position.”

At last month’s meeting, the board accepted a bid from JH Kelly to replace two sets of doors at the high school. Initially, they wanted to replace three sets, but because of the high price and their budget, the board decided to forgo the replacement of the final set of doors.

Recently a CEO from JH Kelly stepped forward and donated the doors, costing more than $12,000.

“It’s a pretty darn big thing,” Garrett said.

Two bids were received for a new one-way public address system. The school board approved the bid from Day Wireless in the amount of $29,392.71. The other bid came form G.B. Manchester in the amount of $51,389.38.

The board also approved a bid from Golden Ladder Interiors for blinds at the high school in the amount of $10,048.32, which was just a little less than the bid from Home Depot in the amount of $10,411.09.

Board member Paula Culbertson, who has been going through the school board policies, said she would like a clear mission statement from the board.

“I’m not aware of any particular philosophy espoused by our board,” Culbertson said. “I would like to hear some discussion by the board on this topic after the election, to come up with what we stand for, what our goals for the district are and working with Mr. Garrett to come up with some tangibles for him so we can give him an actual evaluation.”

The board accepted Maintenance Supervisor Mike Wright’s resignation. Wright has accepted a position as training captain for a large fire district in Grant County.

According to Garrett, the board approved a 2015-2016 teacher salary schedule and revised teacher contracts for all 2015-16 teachers to reflect salaries from the new 2015-16 salary schedule in a closed executive session.

The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 22 at 5:30 p.m.
