Mieke (Eykel) Beitschat, age 85, of Puget Island, Cathlamet, passed away peacefully in her home on January 8, 2026. Her passing marked the close of a long, vibrant, and deeply rooted life defined by love, adventure, and community.
Born on April 1, 1940, in Leeuwarden, Netherlands, Mieke was the youngest of ten children born to Pieter Beitschat and Antje Keuning. Her childhood was filled with the simple joys of Dutch winters-especially ice skating-and as a teenager she sang in a jazz band, revealing early the confidence and spirited energy that would accompany her throughout her life.
Mieke met the love of her life, Frans Eykel, in 1960, and the two married on April 27, 1961. Their 64-year marriage was marked by devotion, shared curiosity, and adventure. In their early years in the Netherlands, Mieke joined Frans in flying gliders with the Frisian Aero Club, a hobby that reflected their shared sense of adventure.
In 1963, Mieke and Frans immigrated to the United States, settling first in Southern California before moving to Washington State in 1970, drawn by a climate reminiscent of the Netherlands. They lived in the Greater Seattle area for many years, where Mieke discovered a love for skiing and hosted many work party gatherings. Mieke worked as a hostess for Scandinavian Airlines and later as a Station Manager for Martinair Airlines- roles that suited her warmth, poise, and natural hospitality.
When Frans later relocated to Portland, the couple spent weekends exploring the region. On one such drive, they discovered Puget Island, a place that reminded them of home. It was here that they planted deep roots and became cherished members of the Puget Island community.
Mieke loved gardening, tending her koi pond, and hosting family and community events. Her home became a gathering place for friends and grandchildren. She also enjoyed visiting River Mile 38 Brewery, where she connected with friends and embraced the warmth of her community. A devoted animal lover and steward of the natural world, Mieke was an active member of the Columbia Riverkeeper. She also participated in the Cathlamet Women's Club and contributed to local home and garden shows.
Mieke is survived by her husband, Frans; their four children-Remko, Erwin, Andrew, and Theresa-and six grandchildren.
Mieke's legacy endures in the family she loved, the friendships she nurtured, and the island community she helped shape. Her Celebration of Life and a private burial service will be held at a future date. She will be laid to rest at Greenwood Cemetery in Cathlamet.
