Down River Dispatches

January 14, 2016

News from Naselle:

Sports calendar for the coming week includes: Friday, boys and girls basketball with Oakville in Naselle at 4:15 p.m .; Tuesday, middle school boys basketball at Willapa Valley at 5:45 p.m., high school girls basketball at Lake Quinault at 7:00 p.m .; Wednesday, middle school boys basketball at Ocosta at 5:45 p.m. Go Comets!

Do you remember the Chinese New Year Celebration last year, in conjunction with the new Chinese immersion program at the Naselle School? Well, mark your calendar for February 20, 4-8 p.m., to help celebrate the year of the Fire Monkey 2016. This will be an event to remember.

The program will be held in the Grays River Valley Center this year, with a traditional Chinese Dinner served buffet style, a silent auction (with some incredible items to bid on), traditional Chinese New Year games, art activities, and culminating in the gym with the infamous Lion Dance.

More information to come in the next few weeks as I get the particulars. Sounds like incredible fun for the whole family.

Westend news

Looking for a nice quiet way to spend a Sunday afternoon after church or before a football game? Come on by the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park, 1-5 p.m., for the annual 3 C’s Showdown. Sit and relax with a hot bowl of home made chili, chowder or chicken noodle soup with crackers or bread and a beverage. Or if you can’t stay because the game is on, come on in and take some home with you (no cooking on your part).

Donations will be accepted for the meal and will benefit the ongoing expenses for the grounds and building.

It’s party time again at the Valley Bible Church. Well, maybe not a real party but everyone seems to have a great time, enjoying the delicious sliders provided by April Zimmerman and giving the gift of life by donating blood. The date for the next blood drive is coming up on January 22, 1-6 p.m. You will be entered in a drawing for a gift certificate for Mocha’s and More when you donate. This Rosburg donor group keeps getting bigger and better. Just goes to show you that you don’t have to live in a big city to find generous and caring folks. For more information or to make an appointment, call Susan Burkhalter.

Only one more week until the annual Crab and Oyster Feed, sponsored by the American Legion Deep River Post #111. It will be held on January 23. If you don’t have your ticket yet, please call Ken Elliott at 465-2271, Nick Nikkila at 465-2595 and Dale Rose at 465-2234 to see if there are any left. Tickets are $28 each, and include dinner, raffles and a dance.

This week’s free Friday Night Movie in the Grays River Valley Center synopsis: In 1974, high-wire artist Philippe Petit recruits a team of people to help him realize his dream: to walk the immense void between the World Trade Center towers. This is a 2015 movie and is rated PG-13.

The show starts at 7:00 p.m. and concessions are available. Won’t you join us? Good movies, good food and good company.

The Grays River Valley Center is looking for a motivated person who would be willing to teach a few classes for novice computer folks. I have had several requests for just basic elements of using a computer. Remember, most of us “older folk” need a little help with these new fangled machines. If you have basic knowledge and would like to give it a try, you would certainly be appreciated.

I have also had requests for someone to teach a class in Tai Chi or equivalent technique. If you know how or know someone else who knows how, please let me know.

The Rosburg Wednesday Senior Lunch Bunch meets each week in the Rosburg Hall for a home cooked lunch prepared and served by Pat Potter and her volunteers.

On Thursdays a senior meal is also served at the Rosburg Hall and is sponsored by CAP. Lunches are served at noon.

Happy Anniversary to Stanley and Helen Rangila. Wishing you many more celebrations.

I would like to publicly thank Jerry and Becky Ledtke for my copy of their new cd. Their music is great, from the heart and very easy to listen to. If you enjoy original, real life music, this is a great choice. “It’s My Country” is available for purchase locally at The Video Store, Cathlamet Market, and Skamokawa Resort. There is a copy available in the Grays River Valley Library for your listening pleasure.

It looks like a couple of wet weeks ahead; be safe and stay dry.
