Mentors for robotics

High School students mentoring second graders in robotics you ask? Certainly says Mr. Eli McElroy's 6th period computer science class and Mrs. Shelley Olsen's second graders.

On March 8, the district launched its robotics and computer science mentoring program. Within a few weeks all kindergarten through third graders will be trained in robotics building, programming and problem solving by Mr. McElroy's class and Mr. Jeff Rooklidge's first period robotics class. A few weeks later fourth and fifth graders will be mentored and trained in programming using a language called Scratch. This was all thanks to a $24,000 grant they received last winter to cover costs of materials and training to prepare students for 21st century careers. After the training the students will be able to use their new skills to respond in a new way to questions and problems posed in more traditional curriculum. To find out more, see robotics demonstrations today (Thursday), 1-4 p.m., at Wahkiakum High School.
