Wahkiakum County commissioners approved a transition plan for the county’s probation officer and acted on other business when they met Tuesday.

Bill Weiss is retiring at the end of the year after serving as probation officer for 30 years for both district and superior court.

District court Judge Heidi Heywood asked the commission to approve a plan to have Weiss work with his replacement, Kirsten Cain, through November and December and to retain Weiss as a consultant in January and February, 2019.

Commissioners approved the plan, including a $1200 consulting fee for the 2019 period. Other expenses are covered by currently budgeted funds, Heywood said.

In other business, commissioners unanimously objected to renewal of a marijuana retail sales permit for Evergereen State Enterprises in Grays River.

Commissioners pointed out that the firm is located across the roadway from Merserve Park, and Sheriff Mark Howie said there is a school bus stop near by.

The objection is only advisory; the state liquor and cannabis board has final authority and approved the permit last year, noting that the park is property of the Grays River Grange. not a public entity such as the county.

“They’ll approve it anyway,” said Commissioner Blair Brady. “The state wants the revenue, so they’ll disregard local opinion.”
