Wahkiakum wrestler Cayden Mendez grappled Carson Sasse of Tonasket in the second round of the state wrestling tournament at the Tacoma Dome this weekend. Sasse won the match 2-0.

Five Wahkiakum wrestlers headed to the 31st Mat Classic, the state wrestling tournament at the Tacoma Dome, this weekend. They were eighth grader Kaiden Ray, ninth grader Cayden Mendez, sophomores Braxton Johns and Jenna Mellis, and junior Jamil Dimaano.

"It was a great tournament overall," Coach Frankie Mendez said. "We have a young team, and will be returning every state participant next year. Jamil Dimaano, a first year wrestler, wrestled great. He lost a couple close matches to top state wrestlers. Braxton Johns and Cayden Mendez also had a great tournament. They both advanced to the second day of the tournament. Even though we didn't come away with medals, it was a great learning experience and gives these young kids something to strike for in the future."
