A young news editor once told the story: "Sports are like hunting bear with a switch," she said in her Arkansas drawl. "Sometimes you get the bear; sometimes the bear gets you, and sometimes you shouldn't go in the woods at all."

And that anecdote can sum up the Naselle Comets football season: They ran roughshod over league and playoff opponents until they ran into the buzzsaw that was the Odessa Tigers team who claimed an 80-26 victory in the state Class 1B football championship last Saturday.

Until the final minute, the Tigers scored every time they got their hands on the ball, leading 32-0 after one quarter and 54-6 at halftime. They gained 555 yards on the ground and 31 in the air. In contrast, the Comets gained 266 yards on the ground and only three in the air.

Jimmy Strange gained 138 yards on 10 carries; he scored on runs of 26 and 21 yards. Fa'aoso Tutu'u gained 115 yards on 13 carries and scored on a 52 yard run. Ethan Lindstrom had 36 yards rushing on 16 carries; he completed three of eight passes with one interception.

On defense, Joey Strange had five solo tackles and two assists; Gabe Gilbert was 5-1, Jason Haman 3/2; Kolt Lindstrom 3/1; Ethan Lindstrom 2/3; Tutu'u 2/2; Jimmy Strange 1/3; Daniel Holt 2/0 and Jordan Lopez 1/0.

The game was the last for Comet seniors Tutu'u, Ethan Lindstrom, and Gilbert.
