Miya Kerstetter hit two from the free throw line in the Lady Mules' 54-44 win against Ridgefield on Monday.

The Wahkiakum Mule girls basketball team split games this week, starting with a loss and finishing with a win.

Last Wednesday, the Lady Mules lost to Mossyrock, 33-30. The team struggled to get hot, shooting 22 percent from the field.

"We played decent defense," Coach Rob Garrett said, "plenty good enough to win, holding them to 33. But offensively, we played individual basketball rather than as a team and we aren't good enough to win that way. It was a great place for us to start building, though, and that was what we did."

Jansi Merz scored 10 points. Paige Mace had eight. Megan Leitz added five. Reigha Niemeyer had three points. Alexzandria and Kimberlee Watkins added two apiece.

Courtney Carlson looks to take advantage of a screen from Nai'a Freeman (11).

"We switched some things up and it went really well," Coach Garrett said. "I thought everyone that got quality time worked on the things I asked them to and it was a huge step in the right direction. I thought Paige (Mace) and Jansi (Merz) had great games. I loved Paige's energy that started on the defensive end and Jansi used her strength to make a presence down low. As a team, the next big step is learning how to step up and be excited to shoot the three and do it with confidence. When those shots start falling, which they will, we will be on the right path to becoming a very good team."

Merz scored 21 points. Mace had 15 points. Niemeyer added seven. Emerald Niemela had four points. Leitz, Miya Kerstetter, and Courtney Carlson added two apiece and K. Watson had one point.
